Invented by Otto von Guericke in the 17th century, the experiment involved two large metal hemispheres that were fitted together and the air inside evacuated using a vacuum pump. With the internal air removed, the external atmospheric pressure (about 101,000 Pascals) pushed the hemispheres together so strongly that teams of horses could not pull them apart.
The physics behind this lies in the pressure difference: inside the hemispheres, there was almost no air, so almost no internal pressure pushed outward, while the full force of atmospheric pressure pushed inward from all directions on the outer surface. This difference in pressure creates a significant net force holding the hemispheres together.

you’re going to whack that Wait wait wait You’re going to whack it with a knife Wait wait I got this This is This is such an Asian trick It’s because he’s loosened it for her No just kidding Here’s the real reason When hot food is sealed in a jar the heat causes the air inside to expand Some of it escapes but as the jar cools the air contracts creating a partial vacuum Now with less pressure inside than outside the surrounding air pushes down hard on the lid That’s why it gets stuck But when she taps the lid with a knife that tiny dent can break the seal to let a bit of air in Once the pressure equalizes the lid comes off easily just like these Magnabberg hemispheres Way back in 1654 a German scientist put together two metal domes but pumped the air out to create a vacuum between them Even when he hitched eight horses to each dome they couldn’t pull the hemispheres apart until he let a little air in

By knocking the side of the lid, it will break the tight seal of the lid or disrupt the pressure. Let me know if you agree or not.
π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘…
And to clarify, tapping the side of the lid and puncturing the lid have the same effect – letting air into the jar. That's the reason why i showed both footages to illustrate the physics. Hope that helps!
jokes on you! i smash the glass!
Not an Asian trick, Mom taught us this long ago π
Would this work on a pickle jar?
Asian trick? I learned that when i was 4 and im white. Thats a cooking trick girl
that destroys the lid … there's literal hole in itπ
That's cool, but it only works if you're planning on using the entire thing at once
But that's not was you said in the video. You showed her piercing the top to release the vacuum.
U nerd beautiful smart and i love you 3000
She didnβt put a hole in it though, I think you may be wrong!
if you are reading this have you considered turning to jesus and repenting of your sins, if no, why and if yes i have 3 questions for you do you believe lgbtq and cursing is a sin or that abortion is wrong
Hold the jar upside down in your non dominant hand. Open palm your dominant hand. Then strike the bottom firmly in the middle 3x with the ball of your palm. You kinda want to feel a pump in the jar when you hit it.
Lid will twist right off.
What about 9 horses?
Se didn't even pierced the lid, here it was done because of the cavitation produced due to little taps.
Use a spoon to wedge between the lid and the jar and pull up a bit, the bubble thing that tells you if itβs been opened will pop upβs be be easier to open
lol using the 90Β° angle on a butcher knife to puncture the lid! Yeah, it works! But thereβs a hole in your lid!
Vid is about tapping side, proceeed explaining puncturing
Science is awesome!
I live in America and I've known about this trick since my grandma showed it to me about 50 years ago. She would sometimes just tap it on the counter and accomplish the same thing.
she didnt break the lid, she just made it bounce a little
She whacked it tho she didnβt poke a whole for the pressure to equalize
u wrong, she didnt made dent in cap she hited edge so power would focus on it and slightly twist cap loosing it enought to twist rest with hand
Me and my family always just pry underneath the side of the lid with a butter knife until we hear the little psssst sound of the air and then it opens easily
No need to puncture the lid, that's actually wasteful if you want to use a little, keep rest for further usage, that hole will give way to moulding.
These trickeries are a luxury of MasterChef only.
The other way and much easier is to expand the gas inside with a little bit of heat that way reducing the pressure. Not heat the entire jar but a little bit like 5-7 seconds of exposure to the lid and that would be enough probably.
For a bought product that's fine, but you don't want to do that for the reusable ones you pickle your stuff in. Not only will it not seal properly anymore, it will potentially expose metal that develops rust.
You can also put the knife to the side and lightly twist to let in some air, in case you donβt want to destroy your jar lid.
I love physics but itβs so hard to lear and understand but the way she explains things is reallly simple and helpful. Thank you @vt.physics
But that doesn't work for ice cream containers where the lid is screwed on.Talenti gelato containers have a problem with their lid system to the point where people have actually broken jar opening devices trying to open the containers. And people are very upset about the design. I've bought gelato from them twice and had to end it up throwing away the item because the jar could not be opened even letting it thaw a little bit or running it under water did not help
Such an asian trick yet im not asian π
Run it under hot water, tap on it a bit and use something with grip to open it. Don't poke a hole in their, especially if you're not going to eat everything.

stop rizzing me up
I made the mistake of heating up my lunch at home, tossing it into a glass container with a lid, and then bringing it to work to eat. I tried for like 5 minutes to pry it open but couldn't get it. Ended up putting it back in the microwave for like 30 seconds and that somehow worked
i hit it with my elbow on the bottom having it upside down in air. lid makes pop sound if you hit it hard enough
You are amazing at content. Good job at slipping that German in at the end. That must be why you mentioned the jar at first, good hook. ππ½
Wow! You made a puncture in the lid and now it's useless.
Thank you science boob
Welp, you have shown TWO different examples. One breaks the seal of the BEAD. but the other example actually puts a fricken HOLE in the lid, allowing air in. WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THATβ½β½β½β½ YOU CAN'T RESEAL IT!!!

She was right, but it's not just an Asian trick, it's also a Mexican trick π we did it all the time.
Just interlock your fingers and and squeeze with both palms this always works for me if it doesnβt work first time rotate the jar and keep trying till you hear a pop sound and yes everyone can do this unless you have certain disabilities
You are soo cute
My grandma taught my that when i was a child π
Wtf, im glad internet exist for people like you, pathetique lmao
