Hello and welcome to Colmar, a jewel of Alsace. Colmar is known for its half-timbered houses and canals. The town blends German and French architectural traditions beautifully. Colmar was first mentioned in historical records in 823 AD. It became a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire. La Petite Venise is Colmar’s most charming and iconic quarter. Its name means “Little Venice” because of its scenic canals. The district developed along the Lauch River centuries ago. Traders and fishermen once lived and worked in these houses. Colorful buildings reflect in the water, creating postcard views. La Petite Venise is a perfect blend of history and beauty. It’s a pedestrian-friendly area, ideal for slow exploration. The area features charming bridges and cobblestone walkways. Boats once transported goods through the narrow water channels. The buildings date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The quarter remained largely untouched by war and modernization. Restoration efforts have preserved its traditional Alsatian character. Balconies are decorated with flowers throughout spring and summer. Tourists enjoy canal-side cafés and open-air markets here. Each building tells a story of Colmar’s past inhabitants. La Petite Venise represents Alsace’s cultural and architectural spirit. Many painters and writers have been inspired by its scenery. It remains one of the most photographed spots in France. Early morning light adds a magical glow to the facades. La Petite Venise captures the romance of historic Colmar perfectly. The Schwendi Fountain honors Lazarus von Schwendi, a 16th-century general. It was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty. Colmar is famous for its beautifully preserved house façades. Each façade reveals unique patterns, colors, and carved wood details. The buildings display Gothic, Renaissance, and traditional Alsatian styles. Painted shutters and flower boxes enhance the street’s vibrant character. Timber-framed structures show craftsmanship from centuries past. Colorful facades reflect Colmar’s mix of culture and history. These facades make Colmar one of France’s most picturesque towns. Maison Pfister is one of Colmar’s most iconic historic houses. It was built in 1537 for a wealthy hatter from Besançon. The house combines medieval structure with Renaissance decorative elements. Painted murals and wooden galleries decorate its unique façade. Maison Pfister reflects Colmar’s blend of wealth, art, and heritage. The Collégiale Saint-Martin is Colmar’s main Gothic church. Construction began in the 13th century and lasted over 100 years. The church reflects Alsatian Gothic architecture with Romanesque elements. Its sandstone façade glows warmly in Colmar’s evening light. Saint-Martin has been a center of faith for centuries. The church houses stained glass, sculptures, and historic pipe organs.

  2. Lovely walk. Did you know that there is a 12 metre tall replica of the statue of liberty at the northern entrance to colmar.
It was to commemorate the designer of the original – Auguste Batholdi. Every day is a schoolday 😊
