SEEKING INSIGHT ANS HELP!!

For context:

Front Chainring: 52-36t

Rear Cassette: 11-32t

Rear Derailleur: Shimano 105 R7000 GS

Firstly, Im aware i’m not supposed to cross chain when riding usually.

But i wanted to know if the derailleur is over extended/stretched!

Originally, this chain (the one in the photo) was paired with the same front setup, but a 11-30t cassette, but since then I have swapped it for a 11-32t and kept the original chain.

I plan on maybe swapping the chain to a new one, so i wanted to know how I should go about it? The current chain is still in very good condition, but if it’s too short — i will swap for a new one if needed.

Please let me know how I should go about it? I’ve replaced the rear derailleur to a new one already because the pulley jockey wheel thread was completely stripped.

Many Thanks in advanced!

  1. As a guide, the transition between the 2 pulley wheels should produce a chain that is almost upright/straight.

    Up and down, that is.

Image below with orange line for reference. Once it starts going in the direction of your current set up, it usually means chain is to short or gear combo is not compatible.

In this case we know this combination of gears is compatible so the chain is too short.

Could you get away with it? Probably. Not sure what the shift quality is like or if you care/ can tell.

The little spring in there is working overtime. Long term, not ideal.

Everyone always says “don’t cross chain”

But I’d rather be able to cross chain than have to drop to the little ring if it’s a short climb.

Per shimano cut chain to length at big/big + 2

The slack chain images aren’t too useful. Holding the chain, while off the RD pulleys, in the big/big with the tail showing two links dangling would be the necessary image to validate success (or three, if the end is an outer plate) is the typical method and specified in the RD-R5700 manual.

Your gearing is within spec of max capacity and max difference.

Your chain is a bit short. I would go at least 1 set of inner and outer plates.

I think you already know that you’re pushing the limits, but I’d ride it until the chain wears out, then replace with a slightly longer one.

  5. Yes but you shouldn’t run the chain at that angle anyway so you might get away with it if your careful
