Before each match, players weigh in and we collect their body mass. This helps us to track changes in weight following the game and gives a good indication on rehydration and refuel requirements postame. With 30Β° heat and 80% humidity, we had water breaks at 20 and 60 minutes. Vital to keep hydrated and top up fuel levels. At Halime, it’s a quick refuel, fluids, electrolytes, and of course, more carbohydrates. Then lightning strikes, delays midame, and another opportunity to top up fluids and energy stores. After the final whistle, postgame weigh-in, average weight lost was 1.3 kilos. The biggest drop, one player lost 3.8 kilos. For each kilogram of weight lost, we aim to drink 150% to ensure adequate rehydration. Rugby in these conditions, it’s a battle against the elements.
