You would expect that a tire would wear out as you make km/mls but because of my “puncture” experience I kept the Bontrager R4 tires on the shelf for a while and decided to use them in dry weather.
Do you mean how long should it last sitting on the shelf, unridden? It depends…different tires will be different, different storage conditions (heat, humidity, proximity to chemicals, exposure to sunlight) will have an effect.
Those tires are definitely not rideable and the sidewalls look pretty dried-out and stressed even aside from the bulge.

Looks like a manufacture problem to me, I would try to get a replacement

That shouldn’t happen. That tire is an accident waiting to happen. Normal tire wear usually is first noted because of more punctures is my experience.
For how long a tire should last, it depend on the type of tire. I usually ride a race tire and after about 5000k they are worn. That’s for the rear. Front tire has a bit more life in them usually.
You also said these tires have been lying around the a bit. Could well be that the dried out and that’s what’s causing this damage to the sidewall.

how long is a while…is the shelf in direct sunlight?
Cant imagine a tyre should degrade in its box stored in a dark cupboard?
How old is it….if under a year and it shows signs of barely any usage Id say it may be covered under warranty

It says “tubular” on the side wall, those tires need to be glued to the rim. Which I don’t have experience from, just pointing it out. And they can only be used with rims for tubular tires – they aren’t that common anymore.

Yep this look like tubulars to me, good spotting. Lucky they stayed in place as long as they did.

Why you ride such a complex bike?

Sorry about your tire. This trail looks gorgeous though! Where are you riding, if you don’t mind me asking

This is bad glue job but this tire is done for

Looking at the top of the tread and the way the threads on the sidewall have pulled apart I’d say that tire is pretty old or higher mileage.

There is a defect. It will burst, don’t ride it

Just like a car depends on mileage
