  1. That's not a cycle lane – it's too narrow. That white line marks the edge of the usable carriageway: everything to the left of it is the unswept gutter into which no wheel should venture.

  2. That's one of the worst I've seen, where is it?

A lot of bike lanes in Greater Manchester have been converted, over the last year or so – adding actual separation. It's much better than it used to be, especially in the central areas where there's shiloads of students on bikes, e.g. Oxford Road. Over a million a year.

  3. I wholly agree. I am a life long cyclist and used to tear around on a very fast Raleigh road ace 12 when I was in 6th form. Cyclist needs at times to assert themselves on the road to protect themselves. That might mean moving out maybe just 6 inches or so to assert more space.

I'm an IAM advanced driver (highly recommended) and we just need to share the road carefully and protect each other.

  4. I wouldn't call that a cycle lane. If there was a drain, you can't avoid it without getting out of the lane. Some would say, just ride over the drain. My tyres are so narrow they can fit through the grate.
