Don’t use the wire wheel. Don’t sand it bare. Just clean up the rust.

The extra work won’t make it turn out any better. The powder coat’s tougher than spray paint, you want to leave as much of it as you can.

  2. Scuff it up with sandpaper, prime it, paint it.

There’s no reason to strip it for modern rattle can paint. Paint is high tech in 2025.

Smart money takes it to a shop for media blasting and powder coating.

Yes on the frame. Keep it stock on the paint. I bought a univega mixte frame for my wife a while ago and never built it, so I gave it to a buddy who then built it for another friend. I’m kind of kicking myself for that one. That frame was awesome.

  4. Your new paint job will consume many hours of your life and end up looking like shit. It will also scratch and smudge easily.

Stop now. You are making a huge mistake.

It took decades to achieve this look. Hit the rust spots with a rust inhibitor and roll on

  6. Use paint stripper. I used it and it worked like a charm.

You just need to be very careful and wear goggles. It will burn right through nitrile gloves
