We rode the Colchester Causeway, a bike trail through Lake Champlain a few miles north of Burlington, Vermont.

back in May I took a trip to Vermont and got to ride the Colchester Causeway it’s one of the most unique bike trails in the country stick around and find out what makes it so [Music] special the Colchester Causeway is about 7 m North from downtown Burlington Vermont and is part of the longer Island line rail trail the island Line Trail is built on the remains of a train line by the same name originally built by the Rutland Canadian railroad company in 1899 after Decades of Decline and eventual abandonment the line was turned into a rail trail getting to the causeway from downtown involves riding the Burlington Greenway along the coast of Lake Champlain The Greenway or Bikeway as it’s also called is a Scenic pave path that passes several beaches on its way North North to the end of a small Peninsula that juts out into Lake Champlain near the town of Colchester this is where the causeway starts and runs for about 3.7 Mi right through the water on the way to South hero Island the surface is finely crushed gravel and there’s a line of stones on either side in the occasional Tree on a clear day you can make out many of the peaks of the Adera across the lake in New York state you can also see the Green Mountains of Vermont including the tallest peak Mount Mansfield it’s a pretty neat experience riding for miles on a trail with just wall on both sides a mile before the end there’s a cut in the trail to allow boats to pass a seasonal bike Ferry takes Riders across the other side the ferry is free but asks for donations to help to support the service which operates every day during the summer and on holidays and weekends during the fall and spring the ride only takes about 10 minutes though it takes longer to get everybody on and off it’s unusual to see a ferry that transports about as many bikes as people there’s only about half a mile of Causeway left after the ferry but we Rod it anyway to get the full experience definitely try to check it out if you get the chance thanks for [Music] [Music] watching [Music] w
