Hello and welcome to beautiful Heidelberg, a city full of history. Heidelberg is one of Germany’s most picturesque cities. It’s located in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The city lies along the scenic Neckar River. Heidelberg is surrounded by forested hills and vineyards. Its old town features narrow streets and charming architecture. Heidelberg has a mild climate and many sunny days. The city attracts visitors from all around the world. Heidelberg’s skyline is shaped by its iconic castle. The city blends medieval charm with modern life. Many buildings here date back several centuries. Heidelberg has inspired writers, artists, and philosophers. You’ll find history in every corner of the city. The city is known for its romantic atmosphere. Heidelberg is walkable and easy to explore. Let’s begin our walking tour through timeless Heidelberg old bridge. This is the Old Bridge, Heidelberg’s famous stone bridge. Its official name is Karl Theodor Bridge. The bridge crosses the Neckar River gracefully. It connects the old town with the opposite riverbank. The current stone bridge was built in 1788. Earlier versions were made of wood and destroyed by floods. The bridge offers stunning views of Heidelberg Castle. Sculptures decorate the bridge, including one of Karl Theodor. The monkey statue at the entrance is a local favorite. Touching the monkey is said to bring good luck. The bridge has survived wars, floods, and time. It’s one of Heidelberg’s most photographed spots. At sunset, the bridge has a magical glow. Many artists have painted or written about this bridge. From here, you can see the Old Town’s beauty. The bridge is perfect for a quiet riverside walk. This is Heidelberg’s Hauptstraße, the city’s main street. It stretches over 1.6 kilometers through the Old Town. The street is one of Europe’s longest pedestrian zones. Hauptstraße is lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants. You’ll find both modern stores and traditional boutiques here. Historic buildings frame the lively shopping street. Many facades date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The street has been a trade route for centuries. Street musicians often play here, adding to the charm. Locals and tourists alike enjoy strolling along Hauptstraße. The street leads past many Heidelberg landmarks. It’s a great place to stop for coffee or ice cream. Seasonal markets and festivals often take place here. You’ll find old signs and plaques on many buildings. The atmosphere is lively but relaxed at the same time. Walking this street is like stepping through history. This is the Kornmarkt, one of Heidelberg’s oldest squares. The square dates back to the Middle Ages. It was once used as a grain market. That’s how it got the name “Kornmarkt.” The beautiful Madonna statue stands in the center. It was erected in 1718 by the Jesuits. The statue symbolizes the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Baroque buildings surround the peaceful square. From here, you have a great view of the castle. The square is quieter than the busy Hauptstraße. In the past, markets and fairs were held here. Nearby is the former hospital of the Holy Ghost. You’ll also see the elegant Palais Graimberg. The Kornmarkt feels like a hidden gem. It’s a perfect place to pause and enjoy the view. From here, the funicular railway to the castle begins.
