So this has probably been answered many times over, but I’m not sure how to word it. I’m working on rebuilding a bike I got off of Fb. I’m down to
tuning the rear derailleur, and I’ve got it pretty on point. However when I backpedal, it’ll hop two gears smaller. From what I can tell it’s because I’m running a 1x, and the biggest sprocket is so offset from the forward gear. Is there a way to remedy this? Some sort of guide, or is something wrong with the bike that I’m missing?

The length of your bottom bracket is sticking out too far or not far enough .

Yes, that happens because of the extreme angle between chainring and your inner cogs. Friction in the chain and freehub can also contribute to it happening.

I just pedaled my MTB in first gear backwards a bunch, and out of about 25 revolutions, the chain dropped off a couple times. I have a very low drag freehub, and maybe my angle isn’t as extreme as yours.

I wouldn’t worry about it even if it happened with every revolution, as there’s no reason to backpedal enough for it to drop when riding.
