With the first attempt, do you actively kick the back out with your heels? I’ve been trying to whip, but I end up doing a weird-bar turn tweak with no rear end movement.

https://imgur.com/a/pdJcEI9 I’ve kinda struggled to get a good filming spot to show this… Gonna work on this more and try to find some better spots, but I just wanted to explain a concept I always try to put in to words on the subreddit but I feel like it never comes through.
The concept of why angling off (be it scrub/whip/etc) is a safer way to jump, vs jumping dead straight, regardless of going nose in or outright tail splat.
Notice how closely I can place both wheels to the top of the landing? Effectively shortening the wheelbase, functionally, of the bike and reducing the margin for error.
And then of course, the preference to nose in landing in general. Notice how far out the front wheel touches down by landing tail splat? Now imagine that on a much bigger, much steeper jump like you may very well encounter in the bike park. That is a big compression EVEN when you land your rear tire perfectly at the start of the landing.
There are a few other advantages, particularly in regards to messing the jump up entirely and falling. You can typically get away from the bike easier and start a bail from an angle when you are not directly above the bike, directly between the wheels. You have a better chance of avoiding OTB or at least ‘controlling’ OTB as much as you can with the bike (and body) off set. From each other.
And if the jumps are actually big, even without notable wind, angling off the bike can reduce side wind drag through the wheels. Jumping ‘straight’ with nearly any breeze at all is a significant risk.
