I commute between two towns with little to no bike infrastructure for the entire way between them. There are two general routes that I can take, so I decided to make timelapses of two of my commutes to compare them.

(really, this is just an excuse for me to show off my new camera)

Flashing warning: I haven’t perfectly matched the frequencies of my biking to the timelapse ratio yet, so there are some more jittery parts to these videos.

[This is the first one.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7faBeGdVGY)

Pros:

– There is a sizeable shoulder for most of the way for me to ride on.

– This is the faster of the two.

Cons:

– There’s heavier traffic, and drivers are generally more aggressive along these roads.

[This is the second one.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PJw103a0eU)

Pros:

– This is a lot more scenic and enjoyable to bike on.

– There’s fewer cars around for most of the route.

– I get to pass through the only place in my city that has real, actual bike paths.

Cons:

– This route is a little longer.

– Most of the way has no shoulder or separated area at all, so I need to ride in the road.

– Zero lighting at night

Which route would you rather bike on?

  1. I think you answered your own question: “a lot more scenic and enjoyable to bike on”.

Why not both? If one direction of your commute is when it’s dark you do route 1 and when it’s daylight route 2
