Steps on the cycle path!
On this ride, I cycled to the beautiful seaside town of Dawlish. Along the way, the heavens opened up and flooded the roads I was travelling on.
When I reached Dawlish, I rode the dedicated cycle path towards the town, but I was struck by the fact there were steps on this route.
I questioned a local resident about these steps and asked what route do wheelchair users take, and it was at that point she released that the path she was walking wasn’t accessible.
My observations are the subject of this ride. So come along and enjoy another great cycling adventure.

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I Yes. [Music] Hi guys, welcome back and thanks again for joining me my ride today. I really do appreciate your company. Well, today it’s um rather cloudy and windy and I have felt spits of rain, but I’m continuing with my journey today. I’m going out to the beautiful seaside town of Tinmuff. So, we’ll go through Doris War and Doris, then out to Tinmuff, then I’ll probably go up around Holden. Yeah. So, I think this route’s just shy of 40 mi and uh roughly about 3,000 ft of climbing. So, it’s not too bad really. Yeah, I really really hope the rain holds off. But as usual, guys, let’s go and see if we see anything else interesting on today’s ride. Oh, those clouds up there look threatening, don’t they? But blue sky there, thankfully. What a hell of a headwind I got. Woo. Yeah. So, at the moment, I’m making my way down into Star Cross. [Music] Oh, thank you, bro. Thank you. Oh, the cloud up there don’t look too promising, does it? Oh, don’t rain on me today, please. [Applause] Guys, it’s raining right now. Doing telegraph pose. Look. Hey. Go. Oh, it’s coming down now. [Applause] Let’s get under this little shelter here. I’m just in this little bit of a bit of a dry area. God, didn’t it come down? That big black cloud up there just dumped it on us. Woo, that was bad. That was then. Yeah, I don’t fancy getting saturated today. Oh, the sun’s coming out now, guys. It really is nice and warm when the sun does come out. Right, guys. I’m on a I’m on this cycle path that leads into Dish. And I never ever ever ride this cycle path. It’s a shared path, obviously. I normally just take the road. It was very humid now. We’ve had a bit of rain. It really is. There’s the bike going really, really well. Poor little thing got absolutely saturated just now. I do actually have my rain jacket for uh days like these, but I did find a little bit of shower, so I didn’t have to put it on. [Music] Let’s continue with this uh cycle path. [Music] Where does it go? That goes in here. Look, I got lost then. Where does it go to? Uh, turn center this way. And we got steps on the cycle path, guys. That’s crazy. Yeah. So, uh the steps on the cycle path, that’s not very uh that’s not very good, is it? Um let’s go that way there. I do some exploring because obviously I’ve never been around this way. But um no, this is it. So we got uh town center seafront station via stepped ramp. What are disabled people do then in their wheelchairs and in their uh scooters? Let’s find out. This obviously part of the cycle network. Yeah, I’m just wondering how there’s a ramp. Yeah, but how did disabled people get down there in wheelchairs and scooters and that way? You got to go out on the road then. Yeah, cuz I Yeah, but it’s still steps, isn’t it? You’re not going to go down in a wheelchair. I I always look cuz my wife’s in a wheelchair. I always think about her. She would get about So, yeah. Great. I’ve never been this way before. steps unless there’s a cut through cuz it does I think it does turn the table. Yeah. No, it kind of led me in this way. So, yes, I’m going to go out that way and explore. Sorry, you can come down there as well. Yeah, I seen you guys come down that way, but I followed the cycle trail around this way. I was thinking, oh, so I’ll go back out that way and see if there’s a another route, isn’t it? Yeah. Cuz like to be honest, when when John said that’s the bike, I said you’re kidding. I’ never balance. No, no, no. I thought you me up, but it says there set. Yeah. Yeah. You should never get down there. My misses. No, but it doesn’t say accessible either. No, it doesn’t. No. So, I was wondering how they would do it. Yeah. We get this far and I think, oh, yeah. May be worth the question to the What question? You never know, do you? Yeah. Have a nice day. Thank you. Yeah. So, if you’re in a wheelchair, you’ll have to come back out this way and then take I guess cross over there. to get down to the city center. That’s crazy. Yes. So, you’d have to go on that path over there. So, we’re going through doorish. Not stopping. Not today. I thought he was going to cross then. Got a union flag there going crazy. The roads are drying out slowly. Yeah. So this road here is obviously a the main archery into the uh into the holiday camps and uh it does get rather rather busy but there is no cycle network or cycle path that leads from uh Doris to Timmouth. There’s nothing. So, um, yeah, if you do want to cycle from, uh, Doris to Timmouth, which is two great little places to visit, you have to unfortunately ride this road. Yeah, there is a path just in there, guys. But I don’t know if that’s a a shared cycle pedestrian path. I have no idea. Yeah, I’m not sure whether that’s a shared cycle path. I wouldn’t like to go on it myself. Oh, this uh this bin truck stinks. Please be patient. Only pass when safe. I agree with that. Yeah, that was a freeway lights. So, it just takes a little bit longer. Slam the brakes on then. Here’s me staying off the pavement. I think he’s parked right across it. Yeah, I don’t think that is a cycle path to my left here. I think that’s just a foot path. Yeah, it’ be quite dangerous cycling down that way anyway with the amount of driveways. Yeah. So, I’m dropping down into Timbuk now, guys. Yeah, have a quick look at uh Tim of Safe Front and we’ll uh continue with our journey, guys. Another road closed. [Music] Oh, I can smell the fish and chips. Nice. [Music] That does look very very tempting right now. [Music] [Music] Yeah. So, I’ve been climbing for just over 3 minutes now, and I still got 2.2 mi of this hill to climb. Big old hills here in uh Timmouth, well, Doris, Devon, everywhere around here. Actually, I am actually in turbo, guys. If you’re going to use turbo, this is the hill to use it on. Yeah. Always take up primary position at these pinch points. Don’t give any motorist a millimeter to pass you because they will. I know you guys do that anyway. We got to keep getting that message out there for all the new uh cyclists that come through. Still got a mile to go on this hill and I’ve been riding it for uh just over 9 minutes. Look, 9 minutes 23 seconds. Still in turbo, guys. I’m off the main roads now. Back in the country lanes. [Applause] Yeah. So, from Timmouth, guys, I’ve made my way up to Holden now. Beautiful up. Yeah, really is. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Thank you. Yeah. Nearly home. Yeah, we got a few spits of rain again, but hopefully hopefully I’ll get back before it really kicks off. [Music] Yeah, that was rather dangerous of it. Right guys, that’s another ride under my belt. I hope you enjoyed that one. Well, if you did, could you please give us a like and come and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already. Anyway, until next time guys, keep smiling and riding. And hopefully I’ll see you soon. Bye for now. Bye-bye. Bye. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

Thanks for another great video.
Cycle paths are a joke in this country. I wish it was like Holland
Town / road planners should be required to test their facilities on cycle/scooter or wheelchair. There are many cycle lanes that I don't use because they involve side swap and need to cross the road. Also, cycle paths with no dropped kerb at junction.
4 seasons in one day on that ride 😂
That "cycle path" with steps is totally mad. My two modes of transport are my wheelchair and my recumbent trike, I couldn't get either down or up that. The concept of a stepped ramp as they called it is daft, its either a ramp or its steps! The local council should be ashamed of themselves. Glad you had a good ride though. Best regards as always and please pass my regards to your lady wife. Sarah
I did a sportive from Westpoint going down Dawlish way and back via Ottery St Mary. It was a hundred mile ride and even today, it is the most climbing I have done in a day. Being from Plymouth, I know Devon is not flat, but Exeter way is brutal !!
👍👍👍
when you brake behinde a horse you pray that thy dont squeal
We've done that Dawlish cycleway and were as surprised as you about the steps. Not very "inclusive" for all users. The planners should engage with "real people" before they install this type of thing.
Nice ride Harvey 🚴👍
Great ride🎉
