Hey everyone, welcome to Alp Galip Travels! If you’re new here, I’m Cypriot traveler Alp, and today we’re diving into one of the Balkans’ most underrated treasures—North Macedonia, a land full of ancient lakes, mountain escapes, and cultural wonders. From the timeless shores of Lake Ohrid to the colorful streets of Skopje, this country truly surprised me with its depth and beauty. In this video, I’m sharing my top 10 must-visit places in North Macedonia, all based on my personal travel experiences and the hidden gems I discovered along the way. Whether you’re planning your next Balkan adventure or just curious about this lesser-known destination, stick around—you’re about to uncover some incredible spots that deserve way more attention. Let’s kick things off with our first stop Ohrid, the soul of North Macedonia and a place that feels like stepping into living history. Ohrid Lake is one of Europe’s oldest and clearest lakes, offering stunning blue waters and a peaceful atmosphere. The lakeside promenade is perfect for relaxing walks with views of boats, swans, and distant mountain silhouettes. Wander through Ohrid’s Old Town, where stone streets lead to charming churches, boutique shops, and cozy cafés. Don’t miss the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, a centuries-old amphitheater still used for summer concerts and events. Take a boat ride around the lake to discover hidden coves and isolated beaches only accessible by water. With its mix of history, nature, and charm, Ohrid is a true highlight of North Macedonia. Skopje, the capital city, is full of contrasts—where modern monuments meet ancient history on every street corner. Start your day at Macedonia Square, home to enormous statues and buzzing cafés that come alive in the evening. Cross the iconic Stone Bridge and step into the Old Bazaar, a maze of narrow alleys, Ottoman-era shops, and traditional restaurants. Ride the cable car up Mount Vodno for sweeping views and a visit to the impressive Millennium Cross. The quirky Skopje 2014 project has filled the city with neoclassical facades and sculptures, giving it a unique urban aesthetic. Don’t forget to visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, born here in 1910. Matka Canyon is a natural wonder just 30 minutes from Skopje and a haven for outdoor lovers. You can rent a kayak or join a boat tour to glide through emerald waters beneath towering cliffs. Visit Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the world, with spectacular stalactites and echoing silence. The hiking trails along the canyon lead to monasteries, hidden viewpoints, and peaceful picnic spots. Wildflowers, butterflies, and bird songs accompany every step through this dramatic landscape. It’s the perfect day trip for those seeking adventure, serenity, or a bit of both. Bitola is known as the “City of Consuls,” with elegant streets and a strong European vibe. Stroll down Shirok Sokak, the city’s main pedestrian street, lined with Austro-Hungarian architecture and buzzing cafés. Visit the archaeological site of Heraclea Lyncestis, where Roman mosaics and amphitheaters tell ancient stories. Stop by the Bitola Bazaar for local crafts, fresh produce, and a glimpse into the city’s Ottoman past. The city also has a rich religious heritage with beautiful Orthodox churches and Islamic mosques. Bitola makes a great base for exploring Pelister National Park and its mountain trails. The Monastery of Saint Naum sits at the southern edge of Lake Ohrid and offers spiritual calm and natural beauty. Founded in the 10th century, the monastery features colorful frescoes and a stunning location overlooking the lake. Locals say if you press your ear to Saint Naum’s tomb, you can still hear his heartbeat. Take a boat ride through the nearby natural springs, where turquoise waters flow gently among reeds and water lilies. Friendly peacocks roam freely through the gardens, adding charm to your visit. It’s a perfect mix of cultural heritage and natural serenity. Mavrovo National Park is the largest in North Macedonia and offers adventure in every season. In winter, it’s a ski resort with beautiful alpine views and quiet slopes ideal for families. During summer, enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through meadows and forests. Visit the submerged Saint Nicholas Church in Lake Mavrovo, visible when water levels drop. Explore remote villages like Galichnik, where time seems to have stood still and traditions are still alive. Whether you’re looking for sports, photography, or peace, Mavrovo has it all. The Church of Saint John at Kaneo is one of the most iconic views in North Macedonia. Perched on a cliff above Lake Ohrid, it’s a peaceful spot with breathtaking scenery. The path leading to the church offers panoramic views and great photo opportunities. The architecture blends Byzantine and Armenian influences, and the interior holds centuries-old frescoes. Sunset here is magical, with golden light painting the lake and hills. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Ohrid. Krushevo is the highest town in the Balkans and one of the most charming villages in the country. The steep streets are lined with colorful houses and traditional wooden balconies. Visit the Makedonium monument, a futuristic memorial honoring the Ilinden Uprising. Try the local delights like Krushevo lokum and sip mountain tea in cozy family-run cafés. The town is a hub for paragliding, offering world-class launch sites with stunning views. It’s a place where history, tradition, and adventure meet. The Bay of Bones is a fascinating open-air museum on Lake Ohrid that recreates a prehistoric settlement. Walk on wooden platforms built above the water and explore reconstructed huts from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Look down through the water to see real underwater remains of the ancient village. The museum offers insight into how lake dwellers once lived and interacted with their environment. It’s a great stop for families and history buffs looking for something unique. Located on the way to Saint Naum, it fits perfectly into a day trip. Struga is a quiet town on the western shore of Lake Ohrid, known for its poetic soul and river views. The Black Drin River flows right through the center, creating peaceful walking paths and scenic bridges. Visit during the Struga Poetry Evenings to witness one of the world’s oldest poetry festivals. The beaches here are less crowded than Ohrid, offering calm waters and relaxed vibes. Explore the Old Bazaar, try local sweets, and visit historical churches hidden in quiet corners. Struga offers a more laid-back and authentic lake experience. And there you have it—my top 10 places to visit in North Macedonia!
