  1. Chain looks worn, can’t tell if the chainring is fine from the picture. Replace the chain and check if it’s skipping. If it is you’ll need to replace the chainring as well.

  2. Chain is worn out (it’s stretched) I would definitely change the chain. But if you were riding with worn out chain, the chainring might wear out much faster than normally. You could share a picture of the chainring teeth for us to see, from this picture it seems fine.

holy hell guys. it’s a narrow wide chainring. your chain has narrow and wide links. simply rotate the chain one link over and it will slot in together. this has nothing to do with worn chain or chainring

  4. Chains stretch when wearing out, because the rollers all los a bit of material over time. If you wait too long with replacement, the chain doesn’t fit on the sprocket any more and maybe even starts to skip (usually on the cassette first). This will also wear out the sprockets faster than normal.

Your chain is way overdue. Better to buy a chain checker (costs just a couple bucks) and check regularly for stretch. This will save you money in the long run.

Start with the chain check it with a chain guage or buy a new one.

If it still looks like that…or makes noise with the new chain…then it’s the chainrings.

So start with the cheapest fix and get a chain.

But, a worn, “elongated” chain will change the pitch of the chainring teeth…then the new chain won’t quite fit on the chainrings…

  6. Yeah it almost looks like it’s just offset one tooth and needs put back on the narrow wide properly
