Brand new Continental GP 5000 32mm (standard version), less than 100 km 😩
Picked up a small but penetrating slice in the tread portion. Didn't see what did it and there was nothing visible/retained in the wound. Is the tire toast? I understand piercing punctures, while penetrating, should be OK, but it looks like casing thread is cut.
Follow-up question: Is GP 5000 too wimpy for city commuting? Or did I just get very unlucky? I do try to avoid the broken glass but the stuff seems to be en vogue of late.

Yes. Replace.
Replace. Never skimp pennies on the things that separate you from the ground. Tires, shoes, mattresses.
If it was as old as my GP5000s, I would replace it. For a brand new tire, for sure you can add a tire or tube patch on the inside of the tire and glue the outer tread back together. Anything from a standard butyl tube patch glued to the inside of the tire, on up to an actual tire patch like this one on Amazon.

I’d replace, I tried to “boot” a conti gp and only a hard plastic heat formed block on the inside stopped the tube from popping out the cut, which was smaller than this one. I also glued the road face, then re glued it at the end of every ride and eventually the tube still pushed past the boot.
Finally, I can say…yes, that’s enough to replace the tire…if you can see your finger through the tread when you push on the underside of the tire, it’s time..because the “tube will see that too”.
I reckon you could sort that with a tubeless tyre ‘mushroom’ patch.
Just patch the tyre
I’d personally use one of the lezyne type patches that you install from the inside of the tyre, glue in and cut off the excess that goes through the hole.

I’d replace it. You could maybe patch the casing from the inside, but it’s borderline.
That looks like a long slice, where the casing threads are thoroughly compromised. Regardless of the newness of the tire, you shouldn’t continue to use it anymore.
If you want to use GP 5000 for city commuting, consider getting the AS version, which has an extra layer of casing for better puncture resistance (and also a compound that has better wet grip).
