Bought wheel set secondhand at a low price. Not sure what previous owner did to cause this. The teeth that is used to install and remove the cassette to the free hub is damaged and I attempted to put the tool in and the teeth that remain start to flex when I apply about half the torque that would be required to remove it. Good news is that the end caps are threaded and I can remove them and the free hub with the cassette still attached, which gives access to all the bearings that need service and all are in good shape and actually looks like they've hardly been used. Cassette also is in very good shape and runs extremely smooth.
I figured that removal would be a very difficult job and if I did do that I probably wouldn't be able to get it back on. So, is there any problem with just leaving it on the hub until the cassette wares out? It's on my wife's bike and she rides pretty light and gets in like 250 miles a year. Being an x01 cassette with xx1 chain, I'm guessing the cassette will outlast the hub as long as I swap the chain at the earliest signs of ware. Any issue with that?

Looks like a fine workaround to me. Like you said, just a keep an eye on the chain wear. And make sure to grease the end caps/threads
