I'm looking to get started in this sport, and admittedly a bit of a cheap-ass, so I prefer to start with something competent, but not fancy to begin with.

I've found a 2002ish Gary Fischer Mt Tam, with what were pretty good parts for the time period. The front derailleur is broken, but I can replace that pretty easily. I'm just curious if there are any other opinions, and if you may be able tell size? I'm 5'8", and ride 54-56 cm road bikes, but can't really gauge sizing of mtb's. The bike seems capable of mounting disc brakes, so that's a big plus. Otherwise, the fork potentially being blown or at the end of its life seems the biggest issue I could run into? Asking price is $125.

I’d argue that’s a candidate for a nice vintage bike. Damn, that XTR derailleur is still sexy today. And the zocchi up front…

It’s a tough question. If your budget for a bike is $125, you probably won’t find better than this. I just spent $350 on “cheap” used wheels because I needed an XD driver for my new cassette. And my friends think I cheaped out and should have just bought carbon wheels.

I would say save your money for a better bike, but I don’t know your situation.
