Whichever you like riding more, I think the 9s is clearly the more functional and faster bike though, and comfort is important for an hour commute, hills?

Whars your comute like? Super flat and mellow id go fixie if there are and hills id go geared bike. I also lean geared bike in general for commute because your comute could change. The single/fixie has the huge advantage of being almost maintenance free. In a perfect work you could keep both use the singe to comute and the gear bike for everything else comuting is very hard on a bike. Just make sure you replace your chain ofter enough and clean it. The #1 drive train killer is a worn dirty chain.
