  1. Headset cap is just for preload purposes only and should never be tighter than a few newton meters anyways. The steerer tube is clamped and held in place essentially entirely by the stem clamps. I won’t comment about whether or not it will “hold” but if the question is if it’s dangerous, it’s not. Potentially damaging to the components but not in a catastrophic failure sort of way.

  2. I’d go a different direction, but this will probably work. The cap doesn’t hold the fork on once the stem bolts are tight, but somehow this offends me, lol.

If you’re going to do it, I’d set up the fork without the mount and with a spacer on top first, and then once everything is good, swap the in mount without loosening the stem bolts. But I’d get a different mount that doesn’t use the steerer/topcap at all on this bike.

    Good luck!

I love my stem cap quadlock mount. Rock solid on 4500 miles of pretty rough terrain.

  4. If it has proper preload and you’ve tightened the stem properly, it should be fine.

But just fyi, quad lock also makes out-front mounts which you can just rotate 180 so it’s in this same position, and that’s probably a little neater

Personally I’d get a bag that goes somewhere else and mount the device on top cap.

  6. I use that exact quad lock stem cap mount on both my bikes and it works great! holds my phone securely even on the harshest trails. you’re good to go! 👍

Looks terrible, but should function no problem.

If you ever have to mess with the fork or headset, remove the mount, set the preload like normal, tighten the stem bolts, then take off the stem cap and put on the mount.

  8. I’ve tested a lot of phone mounts, but that’s the one. I freaking love this mount. My suggestion for you is to change the cap for the round one and it will look good.
