I’m a self-employed photographer and designer based on the south coast of Massachusetts. Recently, I picked up some client work on Nantucket and needed a way to bring my drone and camera gear along—by bike.
To get there, I took the ferry out of New Bedford. I shoot with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro, which I’ve struggled for years to pack efficiently on the bike. It’s too bulky for a frame bag or handlebar roll, so a rear rack was the only viable option.
After a lot of research and debate, I landed on the Tailfin Aeropack. It’s lightweight, rock-solid, and has more than enough capacity. Best of all, it detaches in seconds—which made boarding the ferry a breeze.
Yeah, it was expensive—about $500 all in—but I see it as a tool for my business. Since I’m self-employed, my bike is a business asset and this setup is a 100% tax-deductible expense. It’s also hauling a $2,000 drone, so in that context, the investment felt justified.
My first trip with the Aeropack was a total success—the job more than covered the cost. Someone recently posted here asking for tips on carrying a DSLR while bikepacking, and I chimed in with this suggestion but got downvoted. So I thought I’d just share my experience more fully in case it helps someone else.

On a side note, Nantucket is a great place to do some gravel cycling, tons of gravel roads and trails to explore.
