While cycling quite fast yesterday (like 40km/h) – I had a catastrophic puncture in my rear tyre (loud – and pressure immediately dropping to 0)

Today when inspecting the tyre, I found out that the flat was caused by this Allen key, which somehow impaled my tyre at a perfect 90 degree angle with the long handle. How is this even possible??? Even Gippity is dumbfounded at how such a thing could happen.

For a follow up question – is my tyre toast or can I repair it somehow? It‘s just 3 months old so it‘d be a shame to throw it out already when it‘s pristine outside of this one colossal puncture

Thanks in advance!

Front tire rolled over and and kicked it up perfectly to stab the rear wheel when it arrived there a fraction of a second later.

As for the tire, that’s a big puncture, but you can probably boot the tire and it’ll work just fine.

  2. Happened too many times, not an allen wrench but many other objects. I try to avoid things I see with my front tire, not because I fear it puncturing the front but rather it flipping up and stabbing the rear.

  3. But think of the millions of allen keys you ran over that *didn’t* puncture the tire.

  4. I wonder if you’d be able to use some contact cement and a punched out cylinder of a used tire from a co-op that is similarly thick. Glue it in there, make sure the rubber bit doesn’t stick out below the bottom of the tire or above the top of it, and I’d even use a tube patch on the inside of the tire to be extra sure. Maybe that would work? I dunno.

You’d have to keep a close eye on it. And definitely not use it for solo long rides in areas with no cell service and few amenities.
