Beginner biker, I pulled my DS 8.4 out of storage and the brakes are dead, the Trek shop recommended a replacement and roughly quoted me at $200-$250 for the replacement. I don't love my old bike, it's heavy and not the most comfortable. My riding would almost exclusively be for leisure, casual rides on paved trails, maybe light gravel, and want something comfortable, which the Verve seems fine for. They have a discount on the Verve 1 for $350 in my size. That seems like the better choice, but would appreciate any insight or additional things to consider.

I believe your 8.4 will have had hydraulic brakes, the Verve just has cable brakes. If you’re worried about weight too, step through frames like this tend to be a bit heavier than diamond frames. But obviously no suspension fork so maybe balances out a bit.
The verve could be alright for casual riding, but I also feel like you should be able to get your bike fixed for a lot less than that. Might be worth trying some other local bike stores and seeing what they say. It doesn’t have to have like for like parts just to get it going. Comfort wise, as long as it’s the right size for you it shouldn’t be too bad. Maybe you could look at some wider tyres.
