The first stage of the Oxford Street West and Liverpool Street cycleway in Sydney officially opened today, Friday, July 25, 2025. This highly anticipated infrastructure project aims to significantly improve safety and connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians in the inner city.
This video features my very first ride on the path and yes it was green lanterns from Taylor Square to Pitt St in the city. Brilliant track.
I included some clips from the unofficial opening ceremony attended by many of the BUGS and Clover Moore and her fantastic Cycling team.
Opening Date: Today, July 25, 2025.
Location: This first stage covers a 1-kilometre stretch along the western end of Oxford Street and a portion of Liverpool Street. It connects Hyde Park to Taylor Square.
Key Features:
It’s a bidirectional separated bike lane, meaning cyclists are protected from vehicle traffic.
The project also includes improved crossings at side streets, upgraded signals at nine intersections, and the installation of new garden beds, street furniture, and paving, making it safer and more pleasant for pedestrians too.
Purpose & Benefits:
Crucial Missing Link: It provides a vital connection to existing inner-city bike paths along Liverpool, College, and Bourke streets, creating a more cohesive cycling network.
Enhanced Safety: Oxford Street was previously known for a high number of bike crashes, and this dedicated cycleway is expected to significantly reduce those incidents, encouraging more people to cycle.
Traffic Calming: The project is also designed to calm traffic, making the area more enjoyable for all road users.
Promotes Active Transport: It supports the city’s goal of encouraging sustainable and active modes of transportation. The City of Sydney has already noted a 20% increase in bike trips in the local area from March 2024 to March 2025.
Collaboration and Funding: The project was jointly funded by the City of Sydney and the NSW Government through the “Get NSW Active Program.”
Future Plans: This is just the first stage. Transport for NSW is planning the eastern section of the cycleway from Taylor Square to Centennial Park, although the timeline for that is not yet clear.
Context: The cycleway is part of a broader vision to revitalise Oxford Street, transforming it into a more vibrant high street with improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
This cycleway is a significant step towards creating a more bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly Sydney
