There is no such thing as a straightforward day at the Tour to France, is there? Yonas Abrahamson finishing third in a stage of the Tour to France in 2023, second in 2024. Today, taking his stage win as we rewatch the images in the runin to the line that saw Tatti Pagar take an almighty tumble. We thought it could have been disaster for the world champion. In the end, the uh yellow jersey grip agreed to a truce. They held things up. We will get to all of that in just a moment because really this day belongs to Yonas Abrahamson. Adam, doesn’t it mate? That guy kilometer zero from the start. First attacker of the day with Maros, the man man that finished second to him. They held off a pelaton that was going at a rate of knots all day long. The attacks from behind, everything, they never got caught. It was just unbelievable. And the only two out front were the first two attacks of the day. He’s a beast. We know he’s an absolute monster on a bike, but to win a stage like that in the manner that he did with the race that was happening behind him, just an absolute animal of the bike. And look, as the cameras follow Tally Pagatra, we will get to that story line in just a moment, but I do want to mention Abrahamson again because he is such a quality rider. He we can see his teammates celebrating not as they’re crossing the line, very cleverly before they get to the line there so that they’re not going to be accused of needing any yellow cards. Um, he wore the green jersey last year, Robbie, on from stages two to four, the king of the mountains from stages 1 to 10. He has been on our radar for some time, but this takes him to another level, doesn’t it? Yeah, he sort of came into our consciousness last year, attacking every single day through the first 10 days of the tour to France, wearing the polka dot jersey, leading the green classification for a couple of days. He went on to win um the Brussels Cycling Classic last year. That was his only win until now. He’s a guy who’s so strong. He’s so often in the breakaway and we just marvel at his strength, but he still only had one win to his name. This is the sort of win that he’s had coming for a while. But what a way to do it. That was it was it blew our minds just watching him all day. What a way to do it. And if you were to read a race reports, Dyk, where it says that he was on the attack from kilometer zero and held off all chasers until the finish line, you would think, okay, strong effort. But when you look at the dynamic of the chase behind and how close much of vunderpool was getting as well that was some day to take the stage win, wasn’t it? Absolutely. You know also the first hour of the stage was 52ks per hour. Second hour was 51 and so it was very fast stage and then to hold the pelaton and also such a strong group behind because it’s not that they were playing they really to close the gap and it was strong strong group behind them and uh to go kilometer zero hold the pelaton and then still to win a sprint like this sho heartbreak for Maru Schmidt though because he’s the other rider who also attacked from kilome zero came oh so close we thought it was a photo finish coming second on the day all of that effort and not getting the stage when Robbie is heartbreaking, isn’t it? Yeah, there can only be one winner as they say, but Maros Schmidt, he rode so well today. The only thing I’d pick apart at the end is maybe Schmidt was a little bit more nervous about the presence and the arrival of Machu Vanderpool, but he he did that last turn on the front and you could see he was pushing the pedals a lot harder than you normally would. If you’re well clear and you know you’re gonna fight it out between two of you, it maybe end up being the difference in Abrahamson just having that few extra seconds to sit in the wheel, freshen the legs up as much as you can in that situation after the day you’ve had. But then to come off the wheel and and take it out, but it was a really even match between the two. They were both brilliant and unfortunately only one gets the stage victory. I think that Maru was maybe very confident for the sprint. Could be. You think it was overconfidence? No, I think Maro that he was really confident to win the stage. So I think that’s why he was pushing so hard to really hold off Machu. You were a teammate of him though. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So he he he is strong but of course like after stage like this then yeah then the sprint is not anymore like it’s not a sprint anymore is it a cigar? It’s poor power but uh yes still he has done a great
