This appears to be a 33yo bike. Not sure I’d drop that much money on it. Thinking you can get something newer, with upgraded components for about the same amount if you look around.

This is carbon, but it’s old carbon so not as refined as a modern bike and quite a different geometry. People tend to think that clip on tri bars make your bike worth hundreds of dollars more, but they’re like a 30 dollar add on you could put on anything. Not that you really need to worry about that for a first triathlon, you’re better off just riding it as a normal road bike, getting comfortable and putting the hours in when training. You can get pretty aero on just the brake hoods with some practice.

Obviously you can’t access your brakes from clip on aero bars, you won’t have as much visibility and it won’t be a proper aero position like a TT bike anyway as they’ll be much higher up.

    maybe half of that.

I would trust carbon that old anyway. no way to reasonably check its condition and carbon at this stage had poor bonding techniques compared to today

This is probably on the high end of its worth. However, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy if it were $300 and it functioned well and fit you. If there is a lot of obvious wear and tear on it then I’d probably offer half that or less. It’s old tech but the bike (or similar) took the most prolific doper the sport has ever seen to Tour de France dominance. So while not modern and fancy it’ll still get you down the road quick enough to figure out if you like riding or not.

If you do end up buying it plan on doing a service to it. Things like new tires, cables and housings, brake pads, chain, possibly bottom bracket too. Most likely has cup and cone bearings in the wheels and headset so you can learn how to maintain those too. It’ll be a good bike to cut your teeth on to learn maintenance and assemble a rudimentary tool kit.

If it were my money and dude would take less than $300 it’d be NBD for me.

I picked up a almost brand new looking 2020 Giant Contend 3 with a bunch of extra gear for $200 off on FB marketplace a couple months ago, which would probably be comparable if not better than this. You can find much, much better deals than this.
