Hi guys.

So I am 6’4” tall and 15st (200lbs-210lbs) and I recently bought this XL 2021 Trek Fuel EX 9.7 to enjoy riding trails again.

This is my first time with a carbon, full suspension trail bike, as my last bike was a 2020 Trek Matlin 7 hard tail with coil forks.

So, moving on to this I thought logically that the tyre pressures would be around the same as my Marlin (38-40psi) and that the forks and shock would tell me the correct PSI for my weight…

Well, the forks tell me that I need about 89psi and the shock just says maximum pressure 350psi .So I looked online and found that people base their PSI on “sag” when the suspension is in its loosest position, aiming for around 25%. Annoyingly, that doesn’t really give me a starting point…

So I started at about 170psi and have been working up and up… currently at 225psi before my shock pump blew in half while releasing it. This made me worried that I am putting too much pressure in, but the sag is still too much! Do I just keep adding pressure?

So that’s it really. I just want to tap into your knowledge because everything I read says to measure bike tyre pressure based on feel and to pressurise shocks based on sag… but it would be nice to have a rough ballpark number of what’s the most common figures for someone of my weight.

I am going to be riding smooth trails with my friends, through woodlands and along canal paths. I’m not going to be doing 40ft jumps or anything…

Thanks all in advance!

  1. the fork pump rs gets up to 300psi. 160 psi is for about 70kg. i would google on foxs site for the manual and the right specs

  2. get a decent shock pump and go by feel, the shock should have about the same amount of “squish” as the fork. It’s all about personal preference too. Ride it, if you bottom out too often then add more pressure and if you are not using full travel then reduce pressure.
