The queen stage, terrifying, three hors catégorie climbs. The Col du Glandon, the Col de la Madeleine, and we’ll finish on the terrible slopes of the Col de la Loze. 171.5 km, more than 5,500 meters of elevation gain. It’s not going to switch off, it’s the Tour de France, the 18th stage of the 112th edition. Make yourself comfortable, we’ll take care of the rest. The riders are in charge of the show, and there’s going to be one today. Abrahamsen will do the sprint again. Watch carefully. Come on, no problem. Jonathan Milan who can launch his sprint less than 100 meters from the finish line. I’m still good. You see, the images ahead. One, two, three, four, Abrahamsen, Tim Wellens with Wout Van Aert in their wake. Wellens and Van Aert could be tasked with being the famous satellite riders today. And we’re soon approaching the foot of the Glandon for the group of Wout Van Aert, Tim Wellens, Groves, Rutsch, and Lutsenko. The Kazakh is on the attack again. There’s one who’s not playing defensively, it’s Primoz Roglic. Excuse us, Adam, but there’s really a race going on here. We saw Jorgenson move for Visma – Lease a Bike. And then, Primoz Roglic, more than 125 kilometers from the finish, on the first climb of the day, attacks Roglic. And that’s panache. The man who, this morning, is fifth in the general classification, decides to attack. Wout Van Aert finds Jorgenson and, in the wheel, Felix Gall, Lenny Martinez, classified riders. Tim Wellens is about to be overtaken by the Armirail-Gall duo, who lead this group , which also includes Matteo Jorgensen, Andreas Leknessund, and especially Primoz Roglic, 5th in the general classification. He’s a long way behind Tadej Pogacar. However, the Slovenian is discovering himself very far from the finish. This will help Arensman score points. Yes. Yes, Martinez has understood. A long sprint, attempted by Thymen Arensman. Lenny is more lucrative. It’s still okay. We were a little worried, but to be able to pull off such a sprint against Arensman at the top of Glandon. We’re reassured by Bahrain’s body condition. And 20 points fall into Lenny Martínez’s pocket. 15 into Arensman’s. There you go, junction. Bravo Bruno. Imperial. Yes. We have to go all the way to the top, Bruno, now. Afterwards, when you’re in Bruno Armirail’s position, it’s true, a very good climber, but he’s not the best climber in the Tour peloton either. I think he’s in a euphoric state. He’s catching up with Jorgenson, Arensman. It’s quite exhilarating to be in Bruno Armirail’s position. He’s in a lot of pain, like everyone else, but a little stronger, ouch. Kevin Vauquelin making a name for himself at the front. His two teammates behind him. Jordan Jégat just ahead, sixth in the general classification this morning. Remember that fifth-place finisher Primoz Roglic is at the front. And you can feel Kevin starting to struggle with himself. Yes, and that tempted you. You have to test him, Pogacar. Look, it’s exploding from all sides. Sepp Kuss gets going. Jonas Vingegaard is on the road. Tadej Pogacar, for the moment, is hanging on. Lipowitz is making an effort to get back. 6 kilometers from the summit. We’re testing Tadej Pogacar. He’s alone, the yellow jersey. He no longer has any teammates around him. There are still two Vismas with Sepp Kuss and Matteo Jorgenson, 45 seconds further up. Lipowitz is hanging on, but at least Jorgenson will be of some use. Sepp Kuss has already made Tadej Pogacar crack twice in the Loze. Matteo Jorgenson leads the leading group, Primoz Roglic in his wake. And right there, we find our trio, our quartet, sorry. Since Lipowitz had managed to come back, but Lipowitz has now slightly distanced himself, we can see it, with Alex Baudin in the front row to witness it all. Here we go. Here we go. The first banderilla signed by Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar is hanging on. Hats off. Hats off to Visma for sticking to their plan. And since the start of the tour, we’ve been trying to put pressure on Pogacar as soon as it gets steep. And very far ahead. That doesn’t mean he’s going to break down, mind you. I’m just saying we need to adopt the same strategy as when Pogacar showed signs of weakness. Come on, Matteo, now’s the time. He’s going to get in the wheel, he has to slow down to get in the wheel. He has to slow down to get in the wheel of Matteo Jorgenson. The American takes the lead. Vingegaard is in the wheel. Tadej Pogacar gets in the wheel. Arensman tries to stay in the slipstream. Vingegaard is in the lead. Everyone’s looking at each other. A game of poker. Obviously, Tadej Pogacar has no interest in getting through. Look, it gives you ideas with Ben O’Connor attacking, seizing this moment , followed immediately by Einer Rubio. And Matteo Jorgenson. And that’s well played. To put Matteo Jorgenson back in front. Yes. We send the satellite rider back a second time. No, it’s very well played. It’s very well played, already on the part of Ben O’Connor, to anticipate. Since behind, who will ride between Roglic, Gall, Pogacar and Vingegaard? Will we force Roglic to ride for third place? Apparently, we should, we should talk. We say to ourselves: Let’s go, we don’t make them take a minute anyway. Watch out, Jonas Vingegaard is getting back on Felix Gall’s wheel. That will allow Lipowitz to get back to the Yellow Jersey group, to get back to Primoz Roglic. They’re right there, but a gap has been created. Less than 40 kilometers of racing. The break is made, 40 seconds between the Jorgenson, O’Connor, Rubio group and the Yellow Jersey group, which includes Tadej Pogacar, but also the two others on the provisional podium of this Tour de France, Florian Lipowitz and Jonas Vingegaard. There, we’ll see. We have our practical case. Florian Lipowitz attacks. That’s good. Florian Lipowitz attacks, 33 kilometers still to go. Come on, Lipowitz. It’s Felix Gall who answers. And for the moment, Vingegaard has wisely stayed at the back. It’s almost 30 seconds back. Don’t look back, you’re gone now. You’re gone, now. You’re gone. It’s a gift that makes you let yourself go. Not to put yourself in the red, of course. It’s a step ahead. It’s a step ahead that he’s taking. If Jorgenson does indeed get up in front to try to take Vingegaard, that’s one less. O’Connor and Rubio, if they anticipated, they were in the breakaway. That’s because they’re in a bit of a bind. The third best climber is him, Lipowitz. Kévin Vauquelin has managed to reintegrate the Oscar Onley group with Frank Van den Broek and Warren Barguil. The Scottish rider’s teammates are getting into the swing of things in this slightly flatter section. In just over 1.5 kilometers, we’ll approach the Col de la Loze and we’re marking time in the Yellow Jersey group. 2’42” lost in less than 10 kilometers with this leading trio. Like Simon Yates. Oh dear! Grab the wheels anyway. Yeah, the Picnic-postNL train isn’t waiting. Van Den Broek rides like crazy, Barguil in the wheel, Oscar Onley. And now we’re holding on for Vingegaard and Pogacar. We waited for them. We waited for them. We wanted Kevin to be in the fight for victory. Everything has to be redone. That’s the logic. But we have a fifteen-minute lead. We’re telling the viewer that in the image. We won’t be playing for the stage victory for Matteo Jorgensen, who will once again serve as a satellite rider who lets himself be gently dropped, who will try to recover, recharge, if that’s possible, slightly. No, but we’re not playing for second place, so he’s going to ride with Lipowitz. No? No, I must have said something stupid. Yates accelerated? A little. It’s not honest, but he’s making up time on the leading duo, O’Connor, Rubio. Yes, but not that much. Not that much. With 20 kilometers to go, I noticed the gap between the race leader and the yellow jersey. There was 3’15”. We’ve barely made up anything. Ben O’Connor and Rubio are riding at the same pace as Simon Yates. Lipowitz is losing time. And up front, it’s Ben O’Connor who’s doing most of the work. Second in the Vuelta a España last year. Far behind in the general classification, this morning he was more than 30 minutes behind Tadej Pogacar. He could save his Tour de France by winning the queen stage. Einer Rubio isn’t handing over the baton. He’s stuck in the wheel, trying to hang on, to resist, but you can tell the Colombian is suffering. Ahead. Off we go, Ben O’Connor, 15.8 kilometers. That’s it, he’s dropped the Colombian. Ben O’Connor, already the winner in Tignes, is gone. That was in 2021. Now he’ll have to resist. In any case, he managed to break away from his last breakaway partner. There was the Rubio threat, but above all, for the stage victory, there’s the threat of the Yellow Jersey group, 3 minutes at 15 kilometers. We have to take risks and try to accelerate to manage to resist around the Yellow Jersey group. It won’t be easy, three minutes in 15 kilometers. For now, there’s no problem, even though Simon Yates is doing a lot of work, the gap has remained around three minutes for five kilometers. A great attack. On a lower gear, much more energetic than Rubio. He’s been dragging him for a few kilometers. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be very tough. After that, his destiny, Ben O’Connor, is simple. If there are attacks, just in the last kilometers, he can go for the stage. But if we have a battle between the big guys quite far from the finish line, 3 minutes 20 seconds, it’s going to be tough. But if it’s always going at a pace like this, it could be for Ben O’Connor. 7.8 kilometers. The crowd is carrying Ben O’Connor to go for another stage victory on the roads of the Tour de France. The threat lies just behind him, 3 minutes 20 seconds behind. Florian Lipowitz has just been caught by the Yellow Jersey group. Now it’s time to hang on for the German rider, the young German rider, who was on the podium at Paris-Nice, on the podium at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Obviously, in the service of the Yellow Jersey. It’s tough, things are going to get tough for Florian Lipowitz, third in the general classification. Oscar Onley is well placed in front. Remember that there are two minutes between these two riders, the podium is being decided. The uncertainty that remains for this third place. Look at Adam Yates. Adam Yates is right on target. He had to be there. He had to be in this stage with the top five riders in the general classification to ride, for his leader. There he is, Adam Yates. Come on, Vingegaard is attacking. Come on, Jonas Vingegaard’s attack. End of Adam Yates’ work. Tadej Pogacar responds. Oscar Onley also manages to stay in the wheel of the Yellow Jersey. A burst of despair for Jonas Vingegaard. He wants to counter, but there’s no room. There’s no room. It’s not wide enough. It’s a risk of overtaking Vingegaard. With your handlebars, you touch a spectator’s arm, a flag, a camera, a phone. It’s fine. There are barriers. Now’s the time if you want to counter Tadej. Under the hail, the 250 meters. An endless final slope for Ben O’Connor. But what a stage. What a stage from the Australian, attacking from the first gates of the Glandon. And we maintained an 800-meter lead over Vingegaard. This image that always remains the same with Pogacar, wedged into the Vingegaard route. The science of racing for Ben O’Connor, who saw in Moûtiers that there was a marking between the UAE and the Visma Lease a Bike. A small attack with Jorgenson, with Rubio. And then, once we gained three minutes, he attacked Rubio to win solo. But he was very strong. He lost practically nothing over the last 10 kilometers, Ben O’Connor. Huge, Ben O’Connor. Starting in a trio with 42 kilometers to go. He isolated himself 16 kilometers from the finish and he can rejoice. He has just saved the tour from Jayco Alula’s team and won his second stage victory on the roads of the Tour de France. Magnificent Ben O’Connor. Jonas Vingegaard cracks there. And Pogacar flies away like a symbol on this 112th Tour de France. He is too strong, he is stronger. He has been invincible even for two years. Tadej Pogacar who comes to nibble at Einer Rubio and who will go for second place in this stage. He cracked on the slopes of the Col de la Loze two years ago. Since then, it is a armor that surrounds Tadej Pogacar and he confirms it once again. At 1’40”, even beyond Ben O’Connor, but the essential is largely elsewhere. He will have been in control all day. He will not have trembled for a single second. He’s going to further establish his dominance. Jonas Vingegaard, grimacing, in total contrast to that of Tadej Pogacar, crosses the line in third position at 1 minute 57. Oscar Onley, magnificent. Two minutes behind. Two minutes behind, takes third place. Eighteenth stage, the French state takes this Tour de France. Here is the top 10 with the victory of Ben O’Connor ahead of Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. We’re not letting go between these two. Oscar Onley is the big surprise of the day. It’s third place that was also very important to us. Yes, it’s completely relaunched because, as you can see, there were 22 seconds, whereas there were two minutes and one second this morning. Now, there are 22 seconds between Lipowitz and Onley. We’re playing on a completely different planet than Pogacar, because we’re 11 minutes behind. Nevertheless, the stakes, the suspense, are there between these two young riders who are the revelations of this Tour de France.
