Hello! I'm looking for new wheels for my Grizl. Currently, I ride with DT Swiss G1800 Spline wheels and Schwalbe G-One Bite 45mm tires. I’m planning to upgrade to carbon wheels and 50mm tires.

Where I live, there aren’t long stretches of gravel—my rides are a mix of road, gravel, and singletrack. My goal is to make the bike more responsive, while also improving comfort and control on rougher gravel by using wider tires. I believe that bigger tires will boost performance on gravel, and upgrading to more responsive, aerodynamic carbon wheels should help offset any negative impact wider tires might have on road performance.

I’d love to hear feedback from anyone who has switched from aluminum to carbon wheels. I’ve read that some Unbound athletes chose the Grizl specifically because it can fit 50mm tires, unlike the Grail. I also found a couple of YouTube videos of Grizl owners doing exactly what I want: running bigger tires with new carbon wheels.

After some research, I found a few wheelsets within my €1500 budget:

  • Zipp 303 S
  • 3T DISCUS 45 | 32 LTD
  • Miche Graff Aero 48
  • Superteam Gravel Classic G28-44 DISC

All are similarly priced, except the Superteam, which costs about a third of the others. I’m open to any suggestions, as long as they’re available in Italy or Switzerland.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

If you want to keep the GRX 1×12 with a big cassette you need a wheel with a microspline freehub (which the Zipp is not compatible with). On a budget I’d recommend the Elitewheels Aero Gravel or Edge.

Zipp 303s don’t support Micro Spline freehubs, which makes them incompatible with Shimano 12-speed MTB cassettes.
