The bike is a 1986 Romet Sport road bike, it has a Favorina groupset. I want to make the bike more modern with some used Tiagra or something, but is it even possible? Currently the bike comes with a 6 speed cassette, so I’m worried that a 10 speed one won’t fit. I need to buy new wheels and groupset, any recommendations or things to look out for? I will also replace the headset and seat post, don’t worry lol. Any tips?

  1. FIrst of all, check for seized parts, try and take the bike apart and also check the frame for rust.
Measure the rear stays, chances are it’s a 126mm width, in that case, you need to cold set the rear.
You can retain the crankset and service the old bottom bracket, if the fixed cup is seized and cannot come out.

How much do you want to spend? There are 9 speed freewheels. Service the old wheels and get a new freewheel.
You can buy 2nd hand wheels with a freehub for a cassette, Shimano Exage hubs are vintage and are very good.

You have to decide what group you want, you will need new brifters.
The brakes can be kept, that kind of brake is very good with new pads.
But something singlel or even double pivot are great.

You may have a imperial size steerer/fork, that means you will need a 1 inch headset and stem.

You can keep the front deraileur, that will work with any modern crank if it’s aligned right.

If you got more questions, feel free to reply.
