Models:
Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 8 DI2
Trek Madone SLR 7 Gen 8
Both 2025
I wanted to share my opinion I formed after riding both bikes, something I couldn’t really find online before.
!!!! IMPORTANT !!!!!:
Both bikes were fully paid for with my own money. I have zero sponsorships and no connections to Canyon or Trek (other than the store salesperson in Trek’s case).
So yeah, my opinion isn’t influenced by any brand. I’ll be posting this both here on the Canyon subreddit and on Trek’s.
General impressions of the bikes
Most of the few comments I found online comparing these two bikes said they were similar. Reality? They’re completely different! Both in geometry and in how they feel to ride/handle.
- Madone: Much more comfortable, doesn’t constantly “demand” power on the pedals. But if you want aggression, you can get it anytime just by changing your riding position.
- Aeroad: This bike basically refuses to go slow. It always pushes you to give your max. Perfect for high intensity and power training. It feels stiffer and more aggressive, but if you want an easy Z2 ride, good luck staying relaxed 😅 it constantly tempts you to go harder.
Groupset impressions
- Madone: SRAM Force E1 (latest version)
- Aeroad: Shimano Ultegra Di2
Ultegra feels smoother when shifting, less clunky. But the SRAM brakes (this E1 version) are way better than Shimano’s. Both braking and lever feel.
Every time I switch from SRAM to Shimano it feels like stepping back in time.
This holds true until the first sprint: Shimano’s fast shifts sound quieter, while SRAM is noisier. But honestly, unless that slight noise bothers you, I wouldn’t go back to Shimano. The feel of SRAM is simply better, even if, technically, both are on par.
About DOT vs mineral oil? I don’t really care. I’m not a mechanic. The shop near me charges the same price for maintenance on both anyway.
Wheels
Bontrager wheels (Trek) handle crosswinds much better than DT Swiss (Canyon). They feel safer and more stable. But Bontrager wheels are kind of… boring? No character in sound or design. DT Swiss feels sportier and looks cleaner, but that’s personal preference.
Support
With Trek, I had to buy in-store (Portugal). The salesperson kept me updated about every step of the order. When I picked up the bike, they set it up based on my bike fit and walked me through every detail, including warranty coverage. That level of service, in my opinion, justifies Trek’s higher price compared to Canyon.
Canyon (EU — specifically Portugal) was very helpful via online chat. All my questions were answered, no problems with ordering or delivery. But I know this depends on location, based on the posts here, Canyon’s U.S. support is notoriously bad.
TL;DR
If you already own a comfortable bike for Z2 training and want something more aggressive, both bikes will meet that goal, but the Aeroad will constantly ask you to push (idk how to explain this). But if you’re looking for a single do-it-all / "One Bike to rule them all" for every type of ride, I wouldn’t choose the Aeroad, I’d go with the Madone (or check out other options too).
That said, I’m still trying to justify keeping the Aeroad. I have time left to return it. Honestly, it’s personal, I find the Aeroad way better looking than the Trek and I’m a huge MVDP fan 😁. But I’m not sure that alone is worth the financial investment long term.
I wanted to share this because when I searched, I couldn’t find anyone who had ridden both and could explain the differences clearly. If you have questions, feel free to ask, I’ll reply as soon as I can.

Interested to know how the sizing compares. What size did you choose for each brand? How different was the geometry numbers between the two?
Switch the groupset over to the Aeroad 😃 I would take it over the Madone any day because it’s sexy and I like to stare at my bike too lol
Gen 7 Madone though would be a very tough choice. The Madone line should have died after that.
This is awesome! I was between the madone and ultimate, and I ended up with the ultimate because of price point.
