Every year, I go on at least one week-long bikepacking trip. This summer, I had something else in mind until I randomly came across a video by @biking-places about carrying filming gear on a bike. The landscapes in the video were so stunning, I initially thought it was Switzerland. But it turned out to be Slovenia, a country I barely knew anything about. A couple of days of research and I already had a route mapped and my tickets booked.

The trip of 590 km and 9000 m of elevation gain took me 6 days to complete. The first part took me through the Julian Alps, a challenging but spectacular region. Day 2 included 2700 m of climbing, and by the end I had to walk my bike uphill for 3km, simply because I couldn’t pedal anymore.

I spent one full day in Ljubljana, a fantastic city: warm, cozy, and full of charm. My trip ended on Slovenia’s beautiful coastline, which is just 47 kilometers long.

This journey turned out to be simply amazing. Slovenia is full of crystal-clear rivers, rocky peaks, open fields, and deep forests. Late June is a perfect time to ride — not too hot and barely any rain. I personally was very lucky with the weather.
