I'm fixing up an Old GT Timberline that has a U-Brake at the rear. I've restored a couple of bikes from the frame up but this is my first time working these types of brakes.
It seems they are missing some kind of spring as the breaks won't return after engaging with the rim (see video)
If it is a missing spring, is this something that can be replaced or are these brakes toast?

Damn, I just took my u break apart to clean but re-installed immediately so I couldn’t do anything dumb or forget how to put it back together appropriately. Have you taken it apart yet?
Forget what the spring looks like(if it’s different than a canti spring?) but you could probably get a new one from a bike shop or co-op for very cheap. Gotta check the plastic components/holes where the spring travel through to make sure they’re not cracked.
The opposite side break arm should have your answer.
