The crank on my beloved generic 1980’s “mountain bike” (pictured above) finally broke today on a relatively smooth gravel trail. I’m looking to replace it with something like one of these listings below:

I know someone with a Trek 7000, and it seems like a great bike, but I’m not sure I really need a hard tail, as I mainly ride my road bike on paved trails and my mtb on gravel. I’m about 5’6”, so I know I’m looking for a 17-18” frame. Just wondering which of these two might be a better option.

Your crank is probably replaceable/fixable, if you are attached to the bike.
Both bikes are upper midrange from around 1991
The Trek 7000 is an aluminum frame so it will be lighter, while it does have a front suspension fork it’s very low travel (under 80mm), not really a mountain bike by modern standards. It came with Shimano LX and DX components
The Specialized Stumpjumper Comp is a steel frame but a fairly light one as steel goes, it has Shimano XT components which are a step above DX and 2 steps above LX (in 1991 anyways)
Not much point in asking about 2 specific bikes if they’re not your size though. Depending on the year and exact model of each which one is “better” will vary.
