Hey everyone,
I'm looking to get a used aero road bike that I can use for both road racing and triathlon. I've narrowed it down to two bikes and would love some input, especially since they're different price points and have different components.

2014 Specialized Venge Elite (Shimano 105) – $1000 CAD

Trek Madone 5.9 (Ultegra Di2) – CAD $1350

My main concerns are:
Older Di2: Is a Di2 electronic shifting system from that era a worry? Are there common issues or things I should look out for?
Overall Value: Which bike do you think is the better deal for the money?
Performance: Which bike would better suit my needs for both road racing and triathlon?

I'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences you have with either of these bikes. Thanks!

  1. Personally, I think both of them are priced too high. Now to the actual question at hand, once you have tried electronic shifting, it’s really hard to go back. It’s not so much what happens while on the bike (which is still really nice), but it’s the ease of maintenance. I never had to work on my bike, it just kept doing what it was supposed to do.

I haven’t checked, but I would be very diligent about researching how much replacement parts are for the DI2. That’s my primary concern.
Considering your original intentions, I’d probably go with the specialized. Or, expand your used market and see if you can find something like a Cervelo at a cheaper price.
