  1. Personally, I think if you aren’t sure, you should just leave it. Crown races are reusable so long as they aren’t bent or damaged; replacing the headset bearings is going to make the biggest difference. I doubt you’d be able to notice a difference between the old crown race and a new one.

  2. That is a replaceable race. you can see the black steel bit is seated onto the grey steerer. the base of the steerer is machined to the proper width the last 10mm or so, and you can see the machined ridge protruding right above the race.

    Removing it with a bearing knife or a chisel will probably work but be difficult, probably to avoid damaging that ring around the top. I would check to see if the replacement headset bearing rides correctly – if there is no damage or brinelling. But if you can stick a screwdriver under it and wiggle it a bit, I would take it off without worry and try the race your headset comes with.
