  1. Good to get that out of the way. Now make sure you can unclip easily enough before you ride again. You may need some adjustments. Less tension to unclip, snugged up shoes with no play in them, or… practice.

We have all done it. Look at the instructions for your pedals. You can usually adjust the tightness of the clip with an alan key. I keep mine a bit loose still.

First time I broke my right knee just below the patella, nose diving directly into a concrete pavement that was on a slope beside me after I just couldn’t get my foot out of the crank brothers clip in’s. I couldn’t feel anything in that knee for two years. 4 years later I gave them another go. Two months ago my front wheel went off the pavement on the Sonoma wine trail next to some people as I was passing by them. I lost a square in of skin on my right elbow down to the bone and fractured my shoulder socket in three places. It hurt so bad I had to lie in the fetal position for 20 minutes while my wife went to get the car. Bicycle frame was aluminum and was bent beyond repair. After watching Connor Dunne on GCN compare clipped in to flats on a run, I’m never using clips again. YMMV.

I know the feeling I just couldn’t get used to it man I went with the slip-ins to the front of your shoes so at least I got something in the back end but I just can’t do it

It happens bud. It’s a right of passage. Won’t be the last time either. But totally worth it.

  6. Practice clipping and unclipping many times just propped against a wall. Then practice being thoughtful and unclipping early when you’re riding, that’s going to limit how much you fall until you get better at it.
