Haven’t owned a bike since I was 16. I’m not really sure what I picked up. He said he had some stuff replaced on his 2 years ago. Rides awesome. I looked up Specialized Rockhopper but I don’t see any that come in this color so I think this must be from a while ago. Wonder how old it is.

Looks like ’92-94.
That is an incredible deal on a *SWEET* bike.
Check out r/xbiking to see what others have done with these bikes. Great score on what looks like a perfect condition bike in a rad color.
Congrats. Get a tune up done and ride the piss out of it. It’s probably old but still good. Back in the day that would be a mountain bike but nowadays would be considered an all terrain bike. The more things change the more they stay the same.
That has 26” wheels. You could upgrade to 27.5/650B on down the line only if you’re hurting for tire choice. I’d say rock what you got for now. Another potential upgrade is getting a fork with a disc brake mount and run disc brake front and leave the rear brakes as is since most of your braking is done by the front wheel. Again, only if you feel the need for more brakes.
Hope you are shorter than 5’8”.
When I was a kid, this was the mountain bike in my worldview. Everything else was department store quality.
You’d better pack up and move before they asked for it back.
Ol Skool baller bike!
Sorry but you overpaid. Ive aeen these all over FB Marketplace for $50-75. That bike was around $150-200 new. It was the entry level mtb bike in the mid to late 90s. Honestly its nothing special in terms of quality high end bikes but it is a useful bike for getting around town. Pretty useless as a true mtn bike. Also is very small so you have to be short to ride that comfortably
These go for $500 range. I’d sell and get something modern.
It’s a great bike. Rim brakes are fine as well. Incredible deal.
That thing is sick. Congrats
legendary frame . It makes for a great commuter bike or gravel bike .
I bought this same bike that looked brand new for $10 and added a Brooks saddle, fenders and a rack and it is a killer city bike. I get compliments every time I ride it.
Those old steel frames are gold. They’re incredibly versatile; a lot of these have slicks on now and are commuting beasts.
You can guestimate how old it is by the number of cogs in the rear. Nine speed clusters were introduced in the 90s so anything less means it’s old, Which doesn’t mean it’s bad but it would be worth replacing the tires if the rubber is cracked and taking some sandpaper to the brake pads to expose fresh rubber. Rubber does degrade with time. If the brake and shifter cables don’t work crisply you could also upgrade those. Or just shoot some lube through the cable housings.
