Hey guys! I got my Pelago Stavanger in size 63 today. It’s a big boy, just like me! Now one of the perks of being tall and having a big ass frame is the use of a large framebag ánd waterbottles.

I’m now measuring the bag and I was wondering if it’s possible (and smart) to have multiple compartments. For instance, a long zipper on top and a smaller one in the left bottom part. Or is it smarter to have just 1 zipper? Or even a straight frame bag without the bulge?

I’d be happy to hear your thoughts and experiences! Thanks!

  1. No bottom zipper needed since the bag is not very tall. One along the top is fine. Bulge is fine too, gives you more area to strap the bag to the downtube. Are you making yourself? If not check out rockgeist, they do amazing custom bags.

  2. Are you planning to DIY?

The issue is that any divider you put in will reduce your maximum packing volume and add to cost/complexity. If you have a horizontal divider on your bike you have 2 long skinny compartments. I haven’t seen vertical dividers but that would make the sewing, structure, and zippers a little tricky, plus you now can’t stow anything long. I think that’s why you only see multiple compartments on full frame bags and not half-frame bags.

As far as the bulge, I like them aesthetically, but they don’t really add much volume. Splitting the lower compartment at the headtube/downtube junction might not be too bad in your case.

I have a 59 cm touring frame and made my own half-frame bag after looking through a good deal of custom and off-the shelf offerings. My bag has 2 full length zippers for 2 compartments – one is super shallow for energy bars, phones, chargers, maps, and anything flat. The other side is basically the full pouch.
