hey there fellow Travelers Mark here with balers world and today we’re here in York England my favorite place to visit in England and I want to give you today are some of the ways that tourists kind of rub the locals the wrong way when they come here to York cuz this is a famous historic city that tourists come to all the time but there’s a few things that people can do that might upset the locals and I think the first thing you need to realize is if you meet someone from York and you don’t offer them gravy with their chips your friendship is over look the people here love gravy I mean if you get your Yorkshire pudding with your Sunday roast You’re Expecting not just a little bit of gravy but like a lot of gravy like just bring the whole pot over please kind of amount and that’s the same thing with their chips okay so if you get them some chips make sure you got some gravy to go with those chips here otherwise they’re not going to be very happy with you and I know I’m starting off with something kind of silly but I think there’s also kind of a more serious thing and and that is if you’re a tourist you’re a traveler coming here to York and you get easily offended or affronted by the locals about their honesty CU honestly the people here in New York are very I would say outgoing in terms of sharing their honest opinions on thing and they don’t mean it to be rude it’s just how they talk to people how they share things and if you’re getting all upset because they’re being honest with you that’s going to upset them because they’re in their mind they’re telling you the truth and wouldn’t you want to know the truth and that’s why they get very upset if you bring some of the stereotypes about York and Yorkshire so if you tell them oh you’re just you’re you’re so cheap here in York they don’t like that when if you say they all wear flat caps and they have you know the whipp it dog and stuff like that those don’t go over very well either so just know that talking about the stereotypes of York of Yorkshire not going to make you too many friends here though you will see the flat caps on sale in more than a few tourist shops now another thing that someone from York won’t appreciate is if you offer them a cup of tea and it’s not Yorkshire Tea okay they love their local tea here Yorkshire Tea is a brand it’s kind of a stronger tea I mean I really like it it’s got some flavor it’s some bold flavored like you’ll enjoy it you’ll see it all over the place and if you offer somebody tea from someplace else nah they’re like nah bro I’m good and speaking of things you think might be from somewhere else is you’re not going to make any friends from people here in York if you tell them that Kit Kat it’s from the US no kid Kat you know the chocolate wafer candy bar you take a break take a kid Kat break kind of thing that’s from here in York and they’re proud of their chocolates here like chocolate made a ton of money for York over the years and Kit Kat is just one of the examples of some of the really tasty candies they’ve had from here the chalks they’ve had from here so don’t be like oh Kit Kat is that from like Hershey’s and Pennsylvania no bro it’s from here in York another thing that might not make you too many friends when you come here to York is um how would I say that be befuddled by their accent and then ask them to repeat themselves look the North in general has a different accent than the south of England and I kind of look at it this way the BBC English we watch in the US is more of south southern England not the north not York sure up this way okay so if you have that confusion be like I don’t understand their English they’ll just roll their eyes and be like H BBC propaganda that we all sound like the queen God Rest her soul another thing that the people of Yorkshire probably aren’t going to appreciate is if you basically you’re from the south of England look there is this kind of north south divide in England between the North and the South and it’s not like super big super bad but it is something that might annoy people if you’re like be like Oh I’m from York and you’re you’re like oh York where is that close to London no it’s not they won’t appreciate that and so there is this kind of rivalry that they think oh the south is all smug and snobbish and they’re like oh well the people from the north they’re they’re from the country and they’re all just you know cheap and stuff like that you do have those kind of differences and that can lead to a little annoyance by the locals if you’re from the south or if you think that York’s in the South and that disdain is it just limited to like the south of England another easy way if someone kind of knows English geography and you tell them you’re from York or someone says they’re from York and someone goes how close is that to Manchester oh my goodness do not compare York to Manchester do not try to give directions via Manchester for people pick something else how close is that to leads I mean I think it might be to say how far is that from London that is from Manchester and sometimes because yeah there is a little competition between the two and so that might be something want to kind of avoid all right so these are just some kind of fun ways that tourists might upset the locals I mean there’s nothing bad here most these things no one’s going to be upset because honestly the people here in York are super friendly they’re super outgoing you’re going to go to some of the like hundreds of pubs around town and I guarantee you will me locals here they want to talk to you chat you up just just learn about what you’re enjoying here in York and they’re going to give you advice cuz honestly you don’t piss them off here at all because the people are really awesome all right so I hope you have a great time when you come here to York be careful with these little things here if you want more serious like donso travel you can watch our video on the Dono visiting York which will give you more like travel advice and more safety advice when you here and more fun advice in terms of getting the most of your visit here in New York but I wanted to share these these kind of upsettin is that tourists do so let us know in your comments below what are other things that tourists do that upset the locals here in York

Come on, don't offend me, Yorkshire tea is the one and only. Now I have to revisit York again, definitely my favourite place! Whilst I am a bloody foreigner, I am super proud living in Yorkshire.
Bang on ❤
If anyone North of Bristol gets mad that you can't understand their caveman talk then they're taking the piss, honestly.
It isn't possible to offend a Yorkshire person. They'll just make fun of you back. Yorkshire folk are very very chilled. I'm from Yorkshire and it takes me some time to get back into the accent when I go back. Also, war of the Roses. Not over.
I volunteer with the Association of Voluntary Guides York. We offer completely free walking tours and that means no tips. (Google us). We are mostly retired people with an interest in history, who have a proven knowledge and just like meeting and entertaining people. Whilst it’s true that we don’t like spending money ourselves, we also don’t like to see others wasting theirs.
I have no personal interest in this but when I was last in York I ate at 'ASK Italian' on Blake St (York YO1 8QG). It's a chain and the food is nice but what is amazing is the building it's in. It's the old The Grand Assembly Rooms which has been used for 'gatherings' since the 1730s. Well worth a visit.
making this video must've been impossible. 100% nicest people ive ever met in York
British people know that tea comes from abroad by the way. It's just the brand that's local.
While you’re in Yorkshire, try some of the local languages.
Instead of saying “good morning” or “hello”, try “eh up!”, “ ‘ow do”, or “na then”.
Rather than “thank you”, say “cheers” or “ta”.
Use a glottal stop instead of saying “the” – don’t overemphasise the “t” like a lot of people do when they’re trying to speak with a Yorkshire accent. It’s “Good, Bad, nt Ugly” (like as in “don’t”), not “Tuh Good, Tuh Bad, and Tuh Ugly”
When leaving, say “I’ll sithee” (the th is pronounced as in with)
People will appreciate it. Or maybe just laugh at you. Either way, give it a go!
Lived in York for years, The worst thing visitors do is get drunk mid afternoon. Hen parties in particular are awful. That tends to be other brits though. Americans were generally fine!
On the York Vs Manchester thing, how can you mention that and not know about the wars of the roses?
Was just in York, their brutal 'honesty' extends to them not minding their own business. I live in London right now, and nobody comments on others because nobody cares and everyone acts busy. In York, a whole lot of them would make comments with me just walking by, ex. 'i saw him over there' or a random comment like that within earshot, that made me feel uneasy because I felt like I was being watched the entire time. I've been to plenty of small towns, and this is a medium-sized city, so it was a bit odd people were acting like it's a village. I appreciate the smiling and hellos, and them living up to Northern friendliness, but they should avoid that.
Yorkshire tea was developed especially to go with Yorkshire water.
Listening to you is enough
As someone who was born in York and I'm still here 45 years later, nothing he says in this video is true.
Doing this in February. Three nights and two days about right?
I'm American and one of my best mates is from Yorkshire. His straightforwardness is one of the cornerstones of our friendship. I know he's going to give it to me straight, and I don't have to walk on eggshells around him either. Works best if you can laugh at yourself.
If you like York, you might enjoy Lincoln, too. It's a bit smaller than York, but with just as much history, and the cathedral and castle are bigger! Also, there are far fewer tourists, so it's easier to get to know the locals.
Im Scottish and only Yorkshire tea
I'm hard pressed to find any locals when I venture inside the walls. Best time to see the Walls and the Shambles is New Year's Day, when there's only half a dozen of us.
Gotta be Yorkshire Tea 😊
I live an hour from York and I do have a whippet and ferrets.
I met some lovely Americans in the back room of the blue bell. They loved English beer and our traditional pubs.
Can confirm…. I’m fuming
Im pretty sure there is no beef between York and Manchester. Also, my dad wears a flat cap, its no myth 😂
