there are rust removal products like evaporust.

if only the chain is rusted, you can get a new chain

Replace the chain, oil the derailleur pivot points and cables and move on. It doesn’t look like it was outside long enough for wheel or headset bearings to be affected.

It should be fine. The rust will clean off the chain with a bit of of wire wool. Worst case, you’ll have to fit a new one.

The bigger problem is that your family thought it was ok to leave your valuable bike outside and unattended, so you’ll probably want to replace them with a better one.

From what I see in the picture, I think you are fine. Id toss the chain for a new one. Check the rust on drive train and cassette, if there is very little on it clean it with a degreasser toothbrush combo.

If its been in heavy rain, you might have to clean the internal routing as well, to make sure there is no rust in there. LBS might help with that.

id say other then that bike is great!

On a side note, when I travel to my parents I have to leave my bike on a terrace, and I have a nice motorcycle cover ordered from china that I use to cover my bike, it works like charm.

    Happy riding!

It is. You can go through the courts to emancipate yourself from them and blocking them on all forms of social media is simple.

  6. Remember, you can choose your bike but you can’t choose your family

    Replace the chain

  7. You would be shocked how bad a chain can look and still work. I’d bet if it still articulates you could get away with lube and just ride it.

    Or replace the chain.

My winter commuter gets this way sometimes on long weekends, but it’s a fixed gear so 90wt and go.

  8. You can replace chain but I’d spray it heavily (put rag behind it) with wd40, wipe very thoroughly, then lube normally.
You’re cross chained, bikes don’t ride well in big-big gear or small-small, avoid those two.
If you want a positive feeling, feel lucky it wasn’t stolen 🙂

Drop any rusted parts in evapo rust or similar overnight, coat everything in oil afterwards.

Warm bath of evaporust in a sonicator will do the job in under an hour.

Take this with a grain of salt as I’m a newbie to the cycling world – but after purchasing a secondhand specialized last month and doing research on similar surface rust (from previous owner leaving his bike outside), the majority on Reddit said to clean up the chain and lube as usual, then ride the rust off.

    Surprisingly, has worked for me.

  11. Your family is definitely reversible…doing it legally or without committing a crime is the hard part.

I’ve had a rusty chain before, just soaked it in oil for a few days and put it back on and got 5 more years out of it lmao.

The big problem is that your family seems like it’s OK to leave your shit outside. The bike problem is fixable. Worst case is you replace the chain or better yet, have the family members buy you a new chain.
