I’m building my first ever mountain bike.

The frame is a 2019 specialized epic hard tail expert (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/epic-hardtail-expert/p/154337?color=237767-154337).

When I shift one way, it works fine. When I undo it, the shifting cable housing goes slack and the cable goes slack.

On the second photo, do I need any hardware under the bottom bracket at that screw hole near where the cables leave the frame to secure it in place?

In the product photos (the blue version), it looks like the brake cable housing just comes out a few inches and then arbitrarily stops. Why not just house the entire cable and cut it where the cable holder is?

  1. I think you can get away without a cable housing stop.

But if it is going slack, it means you probably skipped a step. (Make sure you have shifted all the way to the smallest cog before you clamp the cable. It should be taut on that smallest cog (which means it should not be slack).

You’re missing a cable stop that’s supposed to be on the bottom bracket shell. It will never shift correctly with housing ends that aren’t secured. A specialized dealer should be able to sort you out. Alternatively, you could run a continuous length of housing from the shifter to the derailleur, bypassing the chainstay cable stop. You’ll have to secure the housing to the chainstay with zip ties or something if you go that route.
