Just picked this one up for 50€.
It’s my first ever project. Until now I’ve mostly done some maintenance on bikes so we‘ll see how it goes.
Anyone have any advice?
Planning to convert to 1by.
Also does anyone know what year it‘s from. I had a look at some old catalogues and think it might be 92 but not sure.

Nice find! Converting to 1x is a quick way to make this a money hole. You will likely need a new rear wheel with 8 speed freehub, allowing you to convert to 1×8, 1×9 & 1×10, new rear derailer, shifter, cassette & a narrow wide chainring that fits the existing crank. Worth doing if that’s what you prefer and you have the cash.
Personally I like 1x bikes and I love the old triples too.
If this was my bike, and I was gonna spend a bit of money, I’d get rid of all the black anodised components. (Wheels, bars, stem, seat post) and replace them with silver ones. This will give a more jaunty & classic look in my opinion cos right now it’s got bumblebee from transformers vibes haha. I think the black also kinda swallows the purple in the decals. So I’d go silver and maybe add a few purple bits like chainring bolts or whatever, to soften the whole vibe up cos it’s looking way too much like a tough guy to me rn.
In terms of practical stuff: replace tyres, grips, brake pads and cables first and ride that thing, figure out what you’d like to make it more suited to your riding style and personal style. Do this before anything else, get it riding well and go from there.
It’s a 1992 rockhopper. Yellow bikes are so cool!!
Advice: don’t change to 1by if a change of a drivetrain isn’t necessary otherwise.
(been there, done that…) Keep the front setup as long as it serves.

I converted my GT Timberline to a 1x using some co-op cranks, stridsland chainring, and MicroShift Advent RD/cassette. Very happy with the drivetrain.

Sick color! If you’re in Germany near Darmstadt, I can help with parts. Good luck my guy 👌🏻
