I’m currently shopping for a decent first bike to try DH with. Currently I just ride on flat dirt/pavement for exercise but do live in OR and really want to try downhill riding. I’m 5’9” and about 220lb.

My current bike is a Mongoose Impasse 29er hardtail, but it’s showing its age (I got it from a friend, I’m like it’s 4th or 5th owner) and honestly don’t know the first thing about bike maintenance… But I have done enough research to know that base isn’t necessarily “safe”

I’ve found this bike for $350, it looks like a 2006 but appears to have had a lot of upgrades/modifications to modernize it.

I’m trying to spend under $400 (as I’m going to be investing another $150 or so into a proper helmet/gear to be safe) and haven’t had much like finding even 2020+ hard tails in that price range.

Any help/advice appreciated!

Just rent a bike if you’re trying to go DH you need more of a budget for something safe

Don’t listen to bottomless pockets brigade. That looks like a good and cheap way to try full suspension before you commit to something expensive, yeah the geo is a bit outdated but it’ll ride and you will have fun

This bike also isn’t safe. It’s got old carbon bars, slick tires and rusty bolts everywhere. Just keep looking, you’ll find a marlin or something.
