I apologize if this is against some sort of rule, or if it's just a dumb question in general. I just can't seem to find concrete information online due to the age of this bike.

I bought this old Iron Horse Triumph Comp for 100 bucks off of Facebook marketplace and am hoping to tune it up to use it for my short (3.5 mile) commute. The current tires on it are super worn down and I'm looking to buy a new pair, but I was wondering if it would be possible to perhaps throw on slightly wider/more versatile tires on it to better fit commutes. The rims are Alexrims r450's but the tires are too worn down to identify, they measure around 25mm wide though. I was thinking maybe around 28c but that might also be too wide? It looks to have a bit of clearance on the fork/rear but I'm not sure if it's enough to go wider.

Never owned a road bike like this before so I'm kind of lost. I included a few pictures of the bike just in case it helps add context, any input is appreciated, thanks!

You want to look at 3 areas to determine if you can go up to a 28c tire.

    1. Chainstay / fork blade clearance – is there enough room side to side? You’ll want a couple mm clearance to be safe.

    2. Brake bridge / fork crown – same as above, a couple mm clearance from the top of the tire

    3. Brake caliper clearance – usually the least of your concerns but same as 2, you’ll want some room between your calipers and your tire.

can’t really give you any useful info without seeing the fork clearance

  3. I bet you’re good for 28s. The ones currently on look like 700×25 to me.

The wheels should have no problem with 28s.

  4. It looks like 28 is good. I run 32 on my antique road bike for a cushy ride, but it has extra room in the fork.
