Yes, but cages and straps are essential for stopping and skidding., It’s an essential but can also be a personal preference. Safety wise, definitely better to use cages or straps especially for emergency braking or downhills

They are a personal preference, but most fixed riders have a form of retention. I use both; Cages/toe cages/toe clips/toe straps imo look better, but the downside is they dont fit all types of footwear. Ive worn vans/sneakers/birkenstocks (once) with cages.
For straps/foot straps (the ones without cages and are usually wide strips) they’re better for overall use, if you get a good pair they will stay stiff and can be adjusted to whatever shoe you wear (personally done vans, running shoes, leather boots, Adidas slides, Birkenstocks). They dont look as classy as a good toe cage/toe strap setup but still look good on fixed gears ofc
Power transfer all depends on variety of things, just my unpro opinion but I cant tell the difference for power 🤷♂️

To answer your question, yes its a preference thing.
I like cages since they hold the strap open, and keep my foot in the same spot each time.
Plus, theyre a lot cheaper.
Straps however are usually wider so you have less chance of them digging in on your shoe/foot.
In saying all this, I haven’t tried straps yet, so when I do try a set i may suddenly change my mind.

Cages are easier to get into, more stable and have better power transfer in my experience. I ran straps for about a year but I ended up not liking them. Tried out some mash cages and double straps and I prefer it a lot.

Without foot retention you do not get to experience the full joy of riding fixed gear.

I’ve been using cages for a while just out of preference but in the past I’ve found that straps are more secure and last way longer. the issue with cages is the straps you use for them are a lot thinner, so can snap suddenly when they get frayed. with the proper straps the nylon is stronger and the fraying is obvious way before they break.

I love mines
I never get along with the cages
nice for rainny days where the foot can slip and I feel them easier to dismount than the cages or automatic shoes.
