My old Aeroad i got in 2018, and just sold a few months ago still had original bar tape and looked new. 6+ years of riding, close to 30k miles.

My new Aeroad, received in August-ish 2024, both sides on the top, has started to unravel part way from the end and the hoods. Everything online, especially the guru Calvin Jones says CCW rotation on the left, CW on the right. Looked at pics of my old bike, thats how they were wrapped. New bike – complete opposite. What gives? The wrap on the top is going the correct direction, so I don't know why it's not staying in place. Is this just crappier tape from Canyon these days?

Picture of my old bike (red) before selling it – with 6 year old tape in great shape.

Bar tape isn’t meant to last 6 years. Do you not ride often? I change mine every 6-12 months

  2. You could re wrap it yourself. If you’re lucky, the glue is still strong enough.

  3. The Canyon bar tape is straight trash. Just like the screws they are using. Does not even make sense, they could just use higher quality screws and would immediately get rid of all the customer complaints about it. Would eat into profits at like 3€ per Bike.

  4. I just checked and mine is also wrapped like this. What the…

    Doesn’t unravel tho. Yet.

  5. Wrapping direction on top of the bars is correct towards the rider, the overlapping is a bit small, but keep in mind its an manual process at the manufacturing line and can happen, but you can correct it easily.

  6. mine did exactly the same on a grizl, both sides, same spot.. maybe the same guy assembled it 😉

  7. My bike came with crappy wrapped bars as well, not a deal breaker for me. Rewrap them however you like.

1 year honestly isn’t bad for bar tape, especially if the wrap wasn’t done perfectly originally.

I really like Zipp Service Course tape – good price, similar feel to the Canyon, and is more durable than Lizard Skinz.

Same thing on my 1.5 month old Endurace. Ordered some Silca tape to replace, and in the meantime just re-wrapped with the factory tape, and finished the ends with electrical tape. Worked great for a 56 mile ride on Sunday, and now I got the DT Swiss stop-use announcement so I can’t event ride. 😭

Same exact thing on my speedmax. 1000 miles and it’s very loose. I’ve considered trying to reuse the bar tape, but I think it’s better to just start fresh

  11. My bikes have always come with decent wrap but I always undo it to replace the way-too-wide bars so I’ve never been able to see how well it held up.

So get over it: the mechanic who wrapped your tape was tired after a long shift, or not so good, or only a beginner. Just wrap it yourself and move on. Stop bitch*ing about everything and everything…

  13. Same thing happened on my Giant that i bought local. Stop b*tching about everything. You bought a bike online for a significant amount of money less than in local shops. Canyons are not less quality than other bikes. Shit happens. Fix it, go ride your bike.
