The city of Heidelberg in southern Germany. You’ll find lots of photos of
this city on social media, and they’re all fabulous. But are they too good to be true? Let’s take a closer look
at 3 hotspots in Heidelberg. Heidelberg on the Neckar river
is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its historic Old Town is considered
one of the most beautiful in Germany. The castle is one
of the most visited castles in Germany. It was made of local sandstone, which gives it its red color. It’s the city’s most iconic structure
and is around 800 years old. Apparently one word
describes it best: Oh, romantic. Very romantic. Romantic. Maintenance is necessary
to prevent the structure from falling into disrepair, but even at peak
times, there’s enough space here. This is Sarah Prellwitz, castle administrator. She loves her job. Welcome to Heidelberg Castle. The castle I would say is the
most romantic place in Heidelberg. And it has a love story of his own, which is the history
of Prince Elector Frederick the 5th and the English
Princess Elizabeth Stuart. Despite having an arranged marriage,
the pair were deeply in love. As a sign of his affection
for Elizabeth, Frederick built a magnificent garden that’s one
of the most beautiful in Europe. Later, the palace was
destroyed by war and weather. The ruins were never completely rebuilt. But its ramshackle charm has attracted famous admirers. The painter William Turner,
who depicted the castle as a place of longing. The poet Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe was also a frequent visitor. A bust and a bench in the
palace garden commemorate him. During your visit, be sure
to check out the castle’s cellar. It’s home to one of the
largest wine barrels in the world! It holds around 220,000 liters. They say that people used to dance
on this platform above the barrel. This is Perkeo, the court jester. He was a wine connoisseur and
used to entertain members of the court in the early 18th century. So what’s our final verdict? Pictures on social media don’t lie. Heidelberg Castle is
definitely worth a visit. The best view of the castle is from
the Philosopher’s Way on the other side of the Neckar river. This panoramic trail can’t be missed. It’s amazing to have the
view from up here onto the castle. So yeah, it’s definitely worth it. If you don’t want to walk,
you can also take a Segway tour. The Philosopher’s Way is
located on the southern slope of the Heiligenberg mountain. Because the sun hits it directly,
flowers bloom here weeks earlier than in the valley. Even palm trees thrive here. The Philosopher’s Way probably owes
its name to Heidelberg’s students and professors, who found this
path ideal for inspiring walks. Our conclusion? That view of the castle and the
Old Town from the Philosopher’s Way is truly magnificent. Our next stop is the
Old Bridge, another landmark. You can’t miss it
during a trip to Heidelberg. It was built in the 18th century. The Heidelberg Bridge Monkey
is a must-see for every visitor. Run your hand over the mirror to
become wealthy, or over the monkey’s fingers to return to Heidelberg. Or over the mouse for fertility. The bridge is a popular tourist
spot and the perfect backdrop for romantic wedding photos. Photographer Alexa Bachmann
has photographed many couples here. It’s so realistic. Because when
you see something on Instagram, sometimes it’s not real,
but here it’s perfect. So I think it reflects the reality of the beauty of Heidelberg, for sure. And we agree. Heidelberg
doesn’t only look good in photos. When it comes to the picturesque
Old Town, the majestic castle and the romantic Neckar
landscape, no filter is needed.

  1. The one city the Anglo-Americans decided not to bomb. FDR traveled to Germany many times in his youth, so he was almost certainly familiar with Heidelberg.

  2. Heidelberg is certainly 1 of Germany's top tourist attractions. But you might want to Google up the difference between the English language homophones Too, To, and Two (or even tu and 2)?!! 😉😊

  3. Overstatement, like “too good to be true,” is not helping Heidelberg’s cause. It just sounds scammy and it’s a turn-off. Instead, just say something that people can relate to, like it’s a nice place to visit. Also, all the “romantic “ stuff just sounds fake. Historic. Picturesque. Charming. Those are okay.

  4. We really enjoyed our visit there. A special moment, as my ancestors settled there after leaving France in the 1500s. As Americans, the one downside of traveling in Germany was no ice in drinks on a hot summer day. My husband found the Subway sandwich shop in Heidelberg, which was a dream after 5 hours exploring the castle and grounds. They had an ice machine, lol.

  5. Ooh Heidelberg, the place where Dr. Jose Rizal spending there and one of his life moments in Heidelberg was:

1.Meeting some friends in the area including students who joined the chess club
2.Writing his poem about the city, To the Flowers of Heidelberg
3.Continue his study of ophthalmology with Otto Becker, professor at the University of Heidelberg
4.Learning German Language with some university friends
5.Continue writing his first novel, Noli Me Tangere until in Wilhelmsfeld

  6. Our national hero in the Philippines named Dr. Jose Rizal admired Heidelberg so much, while strolling around Neckar River he spot a light blue flower that resemble the garden in his home in Calamba in the Philippines which made him wrote a poem entitled “A Las Flores de Heidelberg” which translates to To the Flowers of Heidelberg. As a Filipino it is our dream to visit the countries that he traveled to.
