Having returned to work after a health event, I recently decided to start cycling to the office in a bid to improve my fitness.
I would be helping the planet – one slow cycle at a time – while also boosting those endorphin levels.
After all, what was the point in enduring the hassle of building all these new cycle lanes if we weren’t going to use them?
Little did I realise that cycling in a capital city like Dublin was akin to taking part in a Formula One race in a kit car assembled by my child.
It’s not for those with a nervous disposition.

So, I’ve just done the short cycle into work. It’s only 15 minutes. It’s not long. And during that short trip, I encountered a cyclist coming the wrong way down the cycle path, I encountered pedestrians with buggies walking in it. And at one stage, I was also shouted at by a man who nearly knocked me off my bike. There has to be an easier solution to get around the gridlocked city. But I feel the cycle paths, particularly at this strip at Aiman Street where we are right now, something needs to be done. You’re sharing them with buses, with motorists, and also ebikes and e scooters, which can travel up to 45 kilometers per hour. Cyclists are the most vulnerable users. We all know that we need to get more people out of their cars, onto the buses, out walking, and there has to be a better solution than than this.

Pedestrians with buggys walking in it
Maybe she should have pushed her buggy on the road to make way for you

E scooter rider literally behind you navigating the foot path behind you

Buy an ebike that goe 35mph
and fuck everyone.
So why not encourage cyclists to keep the rules of the road . They literally break every rule . Until a bicycle is seen as a vehicle not a toy or fun exercise , no chance motorists will truly respect cyclists . " Feeling safe " on a road with motorised vehicles . Dream on , death can catch you at the most unexpected of times especially if on a road not that you would be doing anything wrong . One risks ones life by living . Everything has death woven into it . Go out cycling and the more experience you get . All these incidents will be normal and part of the show , just getting from A to B .
