I can't figure out what could be causing this pitting, all the way around my rear rim, on both sides. It's on the very edge of teh rim as wrapping around to the inside a little bit. See the picture. It does go all the way around, somewhat evely, but some reas worse than otehrs. There seems to be a periodicity to the pits, which are well defined and round. I haven't had a chance to unmount and inspect the front wheel yet. No one but me has every worked on these including the initial wheel build. I've only ever used plastic tire levers and I've never rolled it flat.
Is this just the rim reacting/wearing to the tire bead's structure or something else? Would love to hear some possible explanations.
Details, if they help:
Bike: Kona Unit X
Rim: DT Swiss XM 481
Tires: Vittoria Mezcal 29×2.6
Sealant: Stans
Tape: Gorilla (I know, I know, but it works).

The wheel was ridden with a flat tire or rolled around with no tire
Mezcal’s have very thin sidewalls, running them with low pressure can ding the rim as there isn’t as much sidewall support. My rear wheel is exactly the same and I run Barzo’s.
